If you imagine a swarm of bees pushing a petrol lawn mower inside a big metal bin when you watch that video, it's almost exciting! You can almost believe it's an M car.

Serious question - why such a focus on electric sedans for everyone (Tesla, BMW, etc)? Is it purely because sedans are outselling coupes? Battery technology isn't there yet to give a coupe the same capabilities with a smaller battery pack, so they need the extra space to hit range target numbers? Combination of the above?

My guess is coupes don't sell as much as sedans, and SUVs are what people use for long trips.

Anyone else notice the panoramic moon roof not there? Hopefully this is just an early test mule and that's why.

Perhaps they're excluding it to provide the best-possible range by saving weight and lowering HVAC demands?

Possible. I want to save weight also but that roof in the concept I have never seen anything like that on any car. Truly makes it stand out and look like the future.

It's that and more. SUVs are decimating passenger car sales, and coupes are becoming a niche within a niche. Furthermore, coupe buyers are probably even less likely to show interest in electric drive than SUV and sedan buyers. So it's a niche within a niche within a niche, and that means it's very difficult to make a business case.

Depends on when you want a car. Before Covid, BMW's facebook page replied to those interested that the i4 would be available sometime during the first half of 2022. Who know's what Tesla will accomplish or upgrade by then. They just raised the Model S to 400 miles of EPA estimated range after only 4 months ago they previously upgraded it to 373. Meanwhile at BMW, they can barely push out the disappointing iX3 to launch.

Love it. Give me good steering feel, good range, and a front end that looks better than the 4er coupe and I'd strongly consider this for my next BMW.

They probably won't do it. Everybody is struggling to compete with Tesla on range, a pano roof and/or sunroof would add weight and diminish range, especially when open.

Personally I couldn't not buy a car without a sunroof.

I'm sure 0/3 of those will come to fruition.

Maybe the range will be OK.

The camouflaged front end actually makes this thing look good...how sad what lurks underneath.

I was just about to say the car will likely have 0/3.

-Steering Feel? In a Modern BMW? -

-Good Range? Define good. Was promised to be over 300, currently goal to be 270, could be even lower when EPA gets their hands on one. Current Model 3 does 250 base to 322 miles and i4 will be a lot pricier.

-A front end that looks better than the 4er? Well being based off the 4er that won't happen. Add to the fact this car will have huge grills despite the fact that an EV doesn't need any grills at all.

Add to the fact that this will be late to the party (sometime 2022), overpriced, and that people want SUV's, I'm not sure how the i4 will be looking when it comes out, who knows what advancements Tesla or other companies make?

From 2018 :

https://jalopnik.com/sedans-dont-mak...ore-1826673000

I contend that coupes should make a comeback in the days of the modern SUV taking over sales. I further posit that an all-electric, high performance sports coupe (ala Tesla Roadster) would help spur the charge.

Consider : The X3 alone is damn near selling the 3 series and 5 series combined (70,110 vs 47,827 and 38,709 respectively, for a total of 86,536). The X5 is sitting pretty at about 55k units, and we now have the X7 at 21.5k units as well (not to mention the X4, X6). All total the X models sit at 159,277 vs just 95,359 for the 3, 5, and 7 series combined. If you want to count the X1 / X2 as sedans that still only brings it to 124,467.

Point being, if you want 4 doors, chances are you're gonna buy an SUV these days. They're no longer the massive gas guzzlers they used to be limited to, the handling and comfort is vastly improved, etc. As the market shifts ever-further to SUVs and trucks (new F150 to be announced in a couple days btw, and high possibility they'll talk about the all-electric F150 option) it makes sense to me that sedans will further decline, leaving a gap to be filled by coupes again.

That's kinda where my mind's at on it, I'd love to hear your guys' and gals' thoughts on it. I mean I can't be the only one thinking an all-electric 4-series that did 0-60 in 2.5s and had a 400 mile range would be an awesome commuter car.
