23 LCI 330 M-Sport suspension clunk or knocking

Well all, 1700 miles on my LCI 330i M Sport with fixed suspension and I have the clunking and knocking suspension when traveling at speeds under 10mph over cracks or broken pavement. You can audibly hear it inside the car and feel the thunk in the steering wheel. Occasionally noticeable at faster speeds. Lots of posts on this, but wanting to hear from those that have had the issue and now resolved if it’s a new steering rack or tie rod ends that rectified the issue. Super annoying that I have to deal with this and can’t get my car in until the 11th apparently. Do I need to worry about additional damage from driving it? Thanks in advance to anyone that comments on this thread!!

I had the same issue on my LCI M340. First they replaced tension struts. That fixed it for about 10 miles, then the noise came back. Then they replaced both front tie rods and realigned the car. This fixed the noise. My car was safe to drive for the time being while the tie rods came in.

Thanks for the info. A little disappointed I have to bring it in already but it is what it is I suppose. Love the car otherwise though.

Just left the dealer and they heard the knocking and SIB 32 01 23 applied to my VIN. New tie rods ordered to be installed on 9/11 and hopefully that’s the end of the issue.

I'm having a clunking sound from my drivers front suspension on my 2022 m340i with only 7k miles on it! Getting it checked out in a few weeks

I hope this is the fix. There are reports that the new tie rods did not work for some, then a new rack resolved it. I have also read solutions involving new struts and top mounts so who the hell knows. Knowing my luck I’ll be chasing this issue for the next year.

Had the same issue since day 1 of my M340, 2023 LCI facelift. Changed new tie rod within the 2nd month. But knocking sound came back within a week, until today it has become louder and louder to no fix. Have not send in again, as I have been hearing the same issues on other LCI owners as well, which has no permanent solution. So am thinking to wait a bit; rather than having to keep sending it back while it’s brand new car. Hope anyone who managed to have a permanent fix, can advise here 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Btw, I had another G20 pre facelift, no so such issue at all. Among the friends & beemers group chat, seems like only the LCi is facing this issue (or perhaps much less on the pre lci)? Is it the same in your area?

Wonder whether the tie rod issues will cause other damages over the long run? Seems like many others have been ignoring it, since there is no fix. Many have just installed with a louder exhaust lol

I had a pre LCI 3 and it was great with no knocking but this new one has been less than stellar. Love how it drives and the tech but the clunking drives me mad. It’s also so sporadic. Sometimes it happens consistently through my drive and other times it’s not even present.

I don’t think the knocking is audible outside the vehicle from what I can tell and it doesn’t seem to impact the suspension performance, so if the tie rods don’t resolve it, I’m just going to wait it out until a true fix is identified.

In all reality I’ll have the car 24-36 months tops before I trade it for another Bimmer, so may just live with it for now. I’m not trying to have the entire suspension replaced.

I have something similar on my 2020 M340, though it's only noticeable at slow speeds turning right, almost at lock. Dealer replaced both tension struts, both strut top mounts, both tie rods; didn't fix it. I'm probably just going to live with it since it's pretty minor and I'm almost out of warranty. I don't like the parts cannon and experimentation. I definitely don't trust them to replace the steering gear without messing something up.

I had this problem on my 2021 almost the exact same symptoms. They replaced the necessary parts that was close to 20,000 miles ago. Over the past couple of weeks I’ve noticed it start to come back and I’m going to bring the vehicle in for another review.

I've been battling the exact same issue ('21 M340i) for the last 6+ months. The tie rod ends didn't resolve the issue. Dealer has been waiting for the "bmw field engineer" to be available to evaluate. Still no word on when that will happen. :-(

sfgator , what were all the necessary parts that were replaced in your case to (temporarily?) solve the problem?

They replaced the electronic steering rack after an engineer approved it. Seemed to be a permanent fix until it wasn’t.

Tie rods replaced today and the knocking is gone. Drove over a small stretch of road 3 times where I could reproduce the knocking every time and it was silent. Probably premature to say it’s permanently fixed but am pleased with the outcome for now. Car felt noticeably tighter after the tie rod replacement and alignment. Car handles much better.

Same here temporary fix with the tie rod. Felt tight and solid initially, but knocking came back within 2-3 days. Till now no solution

Mine is still good after 2 weeks and 600 miles. If the knock returns so be it. Every Bimmer I’ve owned had its own quirks and I enjoy the car so I’m not going to allow a little low speed knock to ruin my experience. Is it annoying, yes, but in all honesty it’s not going to make me get rid of the car.

Sound aside, does it not affect handling/safety, and wheel alignment and thus imbalance tyre wear & tear?

I am hearing this sound in mine, anyone had something similar?
the dealer from where I got my g20 LCI said it was AC cover, they replaced but after driving few days the sound came back.

the car now is in the service and they are still checking.

Fixed!!!

I had the same problem. Couldn’t figure it out. I lowered my car and this rattle started in the front end. I did everything. Replaced parts you name it. Nothing worked. Until one day I decided to loosen all bolts on the strut, strut mount top (4 bolts), sway bar end links, the bolt that hold the bottom of the strut and the tie rod end bolt. I then tighten them back to torque spec in this order….
First the bottom bolt that holds the strut in to 71 ft/lbs plus 180 degrees, then the strut top mount top bolts to 28 ft/lbs plus 90 degrees. Next the away end links I believe to 56 ft/lbs. Lastly, the tie rod ends to 65 ft/lbs. I could have have the torque specs backwards for the sway end links and tie rod ends so check them online as I am quoting from memory but…
Once I did this. It worked. I don’t know if that particular order of doing things helped but hey, No more suspension noise. Had my grinning from ear to ear. Hope this helps someone.
