I just took my less than year-old car in to have an issue with my sunroof fixed, and the dealer told me my tire wear is getting low on the rear tires, I don’t have the specific measurements, but it was in the yellow area. He said if I would’ve waited until my next oil change, my tires would be bald.

Is it normal to go through tires this fast?! I also have the wheel and tire policy, but he told me at this point with wear the way it is even if I do get a nail on one of them or both of them they probably won’t be covered because the tread level is too low.

No one ever explained to me that the treadle had anything to do with whether or not the tire will be replaced. 😡

Any advice on what I should do about my tires? Part of me was considering buying summer tires and using my current tires for the winter but I’m not sure if my current tires will last the winter?

Bridgestone 225/40R19 run flats.

If that are the Bridgestone Turanza they seem fairly soft and don’t seem to last more than 15/16k miles.

Too many variables to consider. What’s your driving style? What tire are you running? What PSI are you running? Weather? Etc.

my stock tires lasted less than 17,000 miles.

Your lucky those tires lasted that long, go with non-run flats. If you want long life you should also consider going to all seasons.

I highly recommend Continental Extreme contact dws 06 plus (geez could the name be any longer).

I drive aggressively. My tire is all season. I have 38 psi in the front and 42 psi in the rear. I live in Michigan, so I drive in every condition.

I’m just surprised I guess. I didn’t think my tires would go this quick. And when I did, I was hopeful that I’d run over a nail and my warranty would kick in which doesn’t seem to be the case. Plus, the dealership is quoting $1000 for two tires.

Do you think I can get away with these tires and run them until spring time and then buy summer tires? I’m planning to maybe take the car to the track this year so I was considering summer tires. If I have to buy all season tires soon, I doubt I could swing buying summer tires this year and will delay potential track days.

I’m a M340 driver and an advisor at a large BMW dealer. The roads where I live are very course. People are lucky to get 10k miles on the rear tires. The Turanzas are brutal. Wear extremely fast and are super harsh. I ran my rears down to end of lease BMW spec put them in the garage and went 4S summer non run flat. It feels like a different car.

I was only able to get 13k out of my rears bridgestone turanza run flat (x-drive too!), but at that time I needed to put winter tires on anyways. I put the winter tires on my factory wheels and will run some PS4S or Sport cup 2's on BBS wheels next year.

my tires lasted about 15k miles. Both rears were really low and fronts on the way out as well. Had them all replaced. Got a nail in front drivers side tire 6 months later. They replaced for free under road hazard waranty. Bridgestone Turanza.

I guess I’m surprised, this is my first BMW and I’ve had Acuras for the majority of my life. I would replace my tires every couple years so I was not expecting to pay $2000-$4000 a year to replace tires especially when I bought wheel and tire coverage.

Is this because the car is more aggressive or is it because the OEM tires are garbage?

Also, what would be a good summer tire that would used primarily for the streets but also be used at a track once or twice a year? I have no spare tire.

Even on my old tuned Honda/Acuras 12-15k miles was the most I got out of 300 treadwear summer tires (with proper rotation). It's the nature of performance tires over economy tires. Also runflats seem to wear faster, and BMW selects tires with more grip and thus less treadlife. Add in the HP/torque these new BMWs have, and tires wear fast.

I'm currently using Michelin PS4S for summer and Michelin AS4 for winter. I live in a moderate climate that rarely sees snow, but frequently sees low temps that would mess up the summer tires. Neither of these tires will last a long time with my driving style, so if you want more treadlife they may not be the greatest choices. They are great performers in their categories though.

I had my factory tyres (Pirelli P zero RFT, star marked, 225 in front, 255 in back) for 50k km (~31k mls) and they were not done. They all had almost 5mm profile (1,6mm is allowed in my country for summer tyres).

It’s not clear in your post if your car is X-Drive or not? M Diff? Staggered wheels? Either way, as most others are commenting, this mileage seems about right.

I’m not sure I’d call an OEM BMW tire “garbage”, but certainly there is room to optimize depending on your goals.

I also learned this in a similar manner many years ago with my E90 335… I got 10k on my first set of Continental DWS. Since then, rotations when applicable, air pressure checks, and adjusted expectations have made it easier to handle. After all, these are performance road cars! More tire wear means more grip/friction… this is a good thing!

Another thing to consider… any good service advisor will make a strong recommendation to you to replace wear parts. That’s their job. Perhaps consider doing the measurements yourself? You may find that you have much more life than is being suggested?

If you’re looking for a summer tire you can track, go with the Michelin PS4S. By many measures it’s somewhat of a “gold standard” for this exact application. If you select a tire that can’t handle the buildup of heat on the track, you’ll end up buying new tires (again) pretty quickly.

On the other side, if you want a street tire that can handle the torque of a B58 with a better chance at longevity, you might consider the Michelin PS All Season, but certainly not for the track. This may also allow you keep one set of wheels to run all year long.

Get a AAA membership and forget about the spare, and ditch the run flats for good.
