M340i Wheel Debate
I've had consecutive MSport 335i/340i leases and in the final year of the current 340i. Definitely looking at M340i as my next ride. I'm struggling with wheel selection and hoping others who debated this can offer some thoughts and opinions. My initial plan was to go with the 792: M Double Spoke Cerium Gray, but these are very similar to the wheels on my 2 F30s so thinking maybe 'change it up' and go with 791: M Double Spoke Jet Black. I'm likely going with TBII over Mocha if that factors in.

I love my 792Ms. They hide brake dust fairly well. Coming from an 07 e90 with the wheel pictured below it does take more time to clean properly with the crevices and design but nothing horrible. I'd do it again if given the chance.

+1 for these wheels. Have the same ones, and I think they're my favorite I've ever had on my BMW (I've had 3 others prior, all M-Sport)

Personally I really dislike black wheels. It looks like you have a black hole at each corner and reminds me of an unmarked police cruiser. So, my choice would be the 792s.

+1 I hate black wheels with a passion. I can't understand why BMW and Porsche think black wheels look good.

I went with 790Ms with all season NON-runflats.
Yes, the 19s look better but I went for functionality / comfort vs the looks. This will be my daily driver and I did not want to worry about damaged rims and busted out tires. Plus, I think the 790s look pretty good and not that many folks have them.

I was noticing that exact same thing. Because of the color of the wheel. You really can't see the break dust

THIS. A dealer has one on the lot that has all the options I want, but also has black wheels. If he can’t swap them out for the bicolor ones than it’s a no go. Black wheels look ghetto and do nothing to accentuate the car. The black front grill and black rear lip spoiler look awesome; but must have the bi color wheels. Looks more professional too.

In my opinion, 792M wheels add more of a distinct design which compliments the accents of the Cerium grey the front grill, Mirror caps and front trim insert. Identifying to onlookers you have an M-Performance model m340i, more unique and pronounced.
However the jet black 791M rims would also compliment the vehicle with the black kidney grill, black side trim insert, black mirror caps, and with shadowline trim. More stealthier-sportier look. One observation is even if anyone has black or aftermarket gloss rims, it hides the design and pattern of the rim. I have the 330 Xdrive, but if I had the m340, I would still go with the same setup 791M Bicolour option. My opinion again is that the bi-colour 791M rims would also compliment the vehicle with the black kidney grill, black side trim insert, black mirror caps, and shadowline trim. Less stealthier look, but the silver exposed bi-colour trim on the 791M wheels add differentiation and character when the car is stopped. Last edited by WXdrivefun; 01-15-2020 at 06:30 AM.. |

I now have 17k on the car and have had ZERO traction issues what so ever. Car handles just fine and tires still look brand new (go ask folks with 19 & 20" wheels to see how their tires are holding up) If you push any car hard enough you will lose traction eventually. I have pushed these tires on hard corners many times in Seattle's rainy days and have had no problem or major scare. This car is my daily and I am still enjoying its comfort and also loving the fact that I have a spare in the back as a piece of mind. I have been stuck on the side of the road on a holiday weekends way too many times to trust BMW road side assistance and the canister they give you. I honestly think you made the right choice. If you get bored with the 18", you can always purchase a nice set of wheel & tire package for summer months.

Moonbag and TTG, thank you both for the advises, now I am more confused...lol
On one hand, I feel I don't drive aggressive enough to have the rear end loose (DD only), but on the other hand, I don't want to handicap the car by picking a less optimal wheel setup. One question I have for those with staggered setup on the xdrive, is it a big issue that the rear wears out faster than the front and there will be an eventual mismatch in wheel diameter between the two? |

As moonbag stated, you will lose ability to rotate (I rotate my tires with every oil change at 5k intervals) and yes, most likely rears will wear out faster but won't cause any x-drive issues. On the flip side, you can order the car with most aggressive wheels of your choice and buy 18" take offs for daily purposes. This is what I did with my 5 series in the past. Just make sure to check the $150 spare wheel option on your order. Spare will reduce the trunk size significantly but you can take the spare and its components out and re-claim your trunk space with no problems. Just order a new trunk liner from BMW. Let us know which route you end up going with.

Hi there. Just chiming in. I really wanted the 19 but went with the standard 18. The pot holes and bad roads here would kill the 19 in the NYC tristate area. If you go with the 19, I would recommend the wheel and tire package insurance. Here is what it the 18 look like with the tanzanite. Keep us posted on the final decision

Hi everyone, thanks again for all the feedback. I have only been lurking in the forum for a month, but I am amazed at how knowledgeable and helpful everyone is. Right now, I am leaning towards sticking with the 18inch square setup because it allows tire rotation between axles. Also, roads in San Jose are pretty horrible, so thicker sidewall will definitely help in terms of ride quality. However, it seems to me the high-performance non-rft is an excellent deal considering you get PS4S, 19 inch wheels, and a higher speed limiter for only $600. Replace the 18inch tires with PS4S alone will cost more than $600.
On the subject of higher speed limiter, does it bother anyone that square setup only gets you 130mph instead of 150mph? I know in reality, I will never drive that fast as I'm not going to take the car to the track, but it does hurt my ego a bit....lol Last edited by foxmon; 07-29-2021 at 12:42 AM.. |

I completely forgot about the lower speed limiter - now my ego is hurt!
Kidding aside, I did have my old F30 340 over that lower limiter (maybe two times in 3.5 years) and given how much more powerful the new M340 is, it would be a cinch to blow past 130 on a wide open highway - so maybe what I'm saying is maybe the lower speed limiter is a good thing, for me anyway. One more thing to consider both for traction and appearance - 235/245 square setup! Putting aside the impact the wheel design/choice/size has on the overall look of the car (which is tough for me to do, as I think they can make or break a car), I'll throw out one other thing I noticed the other day. My 2008 335xi is the last car I had with a square setup until this one and I guess maybe I took for granted the look of that wider rear tire - it just looks cool. I put some spacers on the rear which helps give that more flush look, but I noticed when the car is parked so you can more clearly see both wheels from behind - in this case I was approaching it from a lower positing in a parking lot - those 225s looked downright skinny, and a little bit silly. I doubt most people would notice this. If you search there are several threads discussing different tire sizes on the stock rims. My recollection is that you cant just slap a 235 or 245 on the rear 8" rims and leave the 225s on the front due to the 1% rule, but there are plenty of reports from people running 235s and 245s all around without issue (I think a tiny bit of rubbing at full lock with the 245s). I realize you cant get it from the factory this way, but if the size of the tires ends up bothering you like it did me, that could be an option for the next set of tires. I think your thought process is is practical as far as the 18s and which tires to go with as far as your needs go. Personally, I just prefer the design of some of the 19s by a huge margin (792s and 791s are my favorite), although I will say the 18s look a lot better on both Tanzanite and Portimao blues than other colors.
