The HUD is extremely useful. I would recommend getting it since its nice not to have to look at the gauge cluster for basic information such as speed, speed limits, NAV and switching music stations and songs.

Once you have had a decent HUD like bmw it is hard to go back I have just had a jag xe for 2 weeks to tie me over between my f36 going back and g21 arriving, it was such a big adjustment I found myself having to think where to look to check the speed.

I ordered my g20 without hud.

I drove a few times with it when i had different loaners, but didn't like it at all...

Probably depends on your own preference like a lot of thinks 🤷🏼*♂️

My wife has it in her X1 so I definitely know that I love the HUD, however I was posing the question with it working in conjunction with Live Cockpit. Glad I am getting it though...can always turn it off if I dislike it but I doubt I will

It probably depends on what features you rely on.

If you use active cruise control and need to be told what the speed limit on the road is, it's probably very useful. If you use the in-car navigation a lot, then it's probably pretty important.

To me, I prefer Carplay (or for my Carplay-less car I just use Google Maps/Waze). The in-car navigation is not very good compared to smartphones these days other than the more accurate orientation/location data, but that's pretty much it. I'd much rather use my phone and for now, HUDs do not support any smartphone data. That support is coming but most likely will not be supported by the current iDrive version in BMWs.

I will say having a HUD is nice. If I had the option between two cars with the only difference being the HUD, I'd pick the one with the HUD. But I'd prioritize a lot of other features before the HUD like transmission, color, suspension type, and tires.

I agree with all the above. Unfortunately the build I am getting does not have Active Cruise Control so thats the only option which I think I will regret but oh well.

This pretty much sums it up. HUD sets a new bar and its nearly impossible to go back.

Having spent some time behind BMW HUDs now, I can't really say it's a feature I care for, and certainly not something I would seek out in a new vehicle or pay extra for. Performance with polarized sunglasses is marginal. I use phone navigation daily and haven't used the onboard satnav in years (and I'm driving a car without CarPlay, no less), so no benefit to having turn-by-turn guidance there.

If I were ordering a new M340i, the only reason I'd spec it with the Premium package is because it is required to add the HK stereo. Really is a shame, $1400 in options I don't care about for an audio upgrade.

I fully understand folks who think a HUD is distracting and don't want one. But I don't understand the complaint about sunglasses. A BMW is so expensive that the cost of a pair of non polarized sunglasses is immaterial.

I don't disagree that the cost is nearly negligible, but it is a compromise nonetheless.

Outside of the cockpit I much prefer polarized glasses, so my only pair of conventional ones never leave my flight bag.

Gee...I wonder why you don't use polarized sunglasses in the cockpit also?

Anyway...different strokes for different folks. I will note that today my car is in the shop and the stripped X3 loaner they provided to me has the analog gauges and no HUD and I do struggle to check my speed without taking my eyes off the road for too long. Perhaps if there were a large speed digital display such as in my digital display I wouldn't mind so much. Having to briefly glance at the speedo and then estimate the actual speed from the dial to avoid radar guns is more work than is worthwhile, especially since the car doesn't have adaptive cruise control so speed control is entirely up to me.

Probably not why you'd imagine, I don't have any issue with most of the recent glass installs, a G1k panel looks just fine through polarized lenses. It's very busy airspace around here, being able to see a little glare off surfaces of other aircraft is nice when trying to pick them out from ground clutter below you.

Wish it showed the transmission indicator to see what gear you're in. I used the BC button to change the gauge cluster display to show the gear on the right side with a large font but it should be on the HUD. Not sure if it is now but haven't seen it on any BMW in the HUD options.

Since it also provided navigation instructions I love it when in heavy traffic in unknown places. No more looking at the dash, only at traffic and following HUD directions. For safety purposes very good option.

I had HUD in my '16 340. FWIW, I found that I always looked at the speedo first to check my speed. Then I thought, "Wait, you have HUD", then I looked up. My next car won't have it, but I did appreciate the Nav info directly in front of me.

IMO... nice to have but definitely not a must have.

You’ll end up having the same info in two or three places... it’s redundant. Looking at the cockpit is not an issue for me

I do love the HUD so far but I agree about the redundancy....I wish they'd offer more customization of the live cockpit
