Any car can be raced by going up against another car in a motorsport contest, but that doesn't make them a "race car". The M340i lives more in the spectrum of street car. It takes some modifications to be a track car. The M240i is more in the spectrum of street car, the M2C is more in the spectrum of a trackable street car. Same goes for the M550i vs the M5C. They both serve different purposes. Why would anyone street race against an M340i? You win and you "beat" a family sedan. You lose and you "lost" to a family sedan. Nothing to gain and more to lose.

I didn't mean to say White isn't a nice color and doesn't get attention, but rather there are probably more aggressive and electric color options that would incite trolls trying to race you. I agree. E46 M3 has a special place in my heart, even though I never had the chance to own one. |

The color makes them look, the badge makes them want to beat you. I drive an 8 year old 328 that obviously can’t compete off the line against most everything out there with a 0-60 of 7 seconds or slightly less. At least once a week there is someone pulling up next to me who wants to race or just beat me to the left lane. Most of the time I just take my time starting off not giving a crap as they speed away with a big hard on likely texting I just kicked a BMW’s butt in a race. Every now and then I go for it by outsmarting the challenger, meaning watching the traffic and the traffic light in the opposite direction, timing a perfect green light start. I enjoy pissing off civic SI kids getting in front of them as they get pissed and tail gate me. Perhaps if I had the power I would do this more often as a middle aged man with the immature mind of a teenager...
My point is de-badging your car won’t change a thing. As long as it looks like a BMW, challengers will be everywhere!

I'm not understanding the point of the thread. Not to sound pretentious ( all BMW owners are automatically given that label) but then why did you even buy an m340? Not to say I want everyone and their brother racing me but I ordered mine knowing this would prob happen their would be some days I'd entertain the notion other days I wouldn't. I wanted current technology that wouldn't be dated ( yes I know technically all tech is outdated when produced) I also wanted some bells and whistles w/ creature comforts that would be too heavy for a track ready car. IMO the m340 is the perfect balance not sacrificing certain things because it might hamper performance along with trying to squeeze every bit of HP

People race against the BMW M340i for the same reason they race against the Mercedes C43 sedan, and the S4....they know these 4 door German cars with the 6 cylinders...straight 6 or V6...turbo charged or S4 B8/supercharged...are worthy of a challenge...so much so these 4 door German 6 cylinders are putting up numbers that rival or surpass the last Generation full M and AMG models. If your thinking is true...why even race an E90 M3? You could only win or lose against an M3 Family sedan?

I lined up against an IS-F yesterday... I used to own an IS-F so I know I can take it off the line with launch control. My wife was in the passenger seat, so no go. But I still gave it 3/4 throttle to protect my lane, dude cut me off anyways. I'll probably never have that chance again... super rare car to bump into on public roads.

I know the tech on the M340i is way ahead, but how do they compare in terms of driving and handling? |

Steering feedback and overall handling performance goes to the ISF but just barely. M340i is a more comfortable daily driver as a trade-off. My M340i has the Pirelli run flats... but I'm confident than an upgrade to the Pilot Sport 4S would do a lot for the handling and feedback. Acceleration to ~100mph goes to the M340i.. think the ISF could be faster in certain gears. Bottom line is the IS-F struggled to do the quarter mile under 13 seconds because it is so hard to tame off the line. With a perfect launch, you might be able to manage a 12.8. The M340i, on the other hand, could predictably do lower 12 seconds over and over with launch control. For whatever reason, sometimes the M340i just hits a flat spot in some of the gears at certain speeds. The car is still new to me and I haven't pushed it that hard and I'm still learning the limits, but I immediately noticed it was faster than IS-F in gears 1-2-3 because of that early surge of torque. |

I really wanted something a bit more comfortable without compromising too much on performance. The 2008 IS-F suspension is extremely firm, my back can't handle it anymore! |

Regarding the standard M-sport suspension, there seems to be a 15 to 20mph punishment zone at speeds between ~40mph and ~60mph. The M-sport suspension can become upset very easily on big bumps and uneven pavement at these speeds. But I still think a lot of this has to do with my run-flat tires. I REALLY need to get the P4S tires. At speeds below 40 to 45 or above 55 to 60, it's smooth and compliant.... so it's a great highway cruiser and around town cruiser. |

Well it happened for the first time today.
After 3 years of owning the Q50 RS400, not a single person tried to race me in it. But within my 2nd week with my M340i, a C43 pulls up next to me, and as soon as the light turns green he floors it. I didn't indulge.... mostly because I'm still in my break-in period, but also because I"m not really about that life. Not really trying to compete with anyone, just want to enjoy a fast car that handles well and offers some luxuries.

A couple of years, I was coming home from a motorcycle ride when a guy in a lifted 4WD pickup wanted to race. We were on a busy city street with a stoplight every two blocks and there was lots of traffic because the downtown farmers' market was starting to wind down. My friend and I were both riding sportbikes and wearing full gear.
He squealed his tires at every light and pulled away because we were easy on the throttle. (If we'd tried to launch even moderately, we would have been at the next light before he'd traveled a hundred feet.) After two or three intersections, we heard a loud "Whoop! Whoop!" of a police siren and gave him a big thumbs up as he pulled over for the cop's flashing red lights. He had been drinking and got arrested for DUI. I found out when he called my office to hire a lawyer. I recognized the story about the "assholes on the crotch rockets who were trying to race me," and told him he was full of it because I was one of the assholes and we didn't try to race him because he was an idiot. |

It happens down here in LA a lot. Mainly youngbucks in their craptastic "aftermarket" laden cars. I just let them go their own way, after a couple of seconds of them failing to goad me into racing them, they move on to the next car.

I would think a gray M340 that's been debadged wouldn't get this kind of attention, but that's just me. With that being said, OP, I can see why this is annoying but just ignore it. There's always going to be idiots on the road and driving german cars, especially BMWs and Porsches seems to attract a lot of people who want to race or do other stupid things. Ultimately I'd just not even look in their direction, turn the music up and go on with my day. |

Sometimes people think I’m trying to race them & the truth is maybe I am maybe I’m not. Depending on my mood I might dust them if I’m at the front of a stoplight but all out street racing is just asking for trouble.
The M340 is a very quick car off the line and I could see people hearing the car and seeing is stance & triggering them to want to race lol. You could easily debadge the car & it would look amazing which will help attract less attention to you & your girl. Also keeping the car in Eco or Comfort will attract less attention but is extremely boring & defeats the whole point of paying $60k-70k for this car. The exhaust note is 90% why I love this car |

The M340i is about as much a sleeper as a C43 AMG. As soon as a car enthusiast sees an "M" or "AMG" badge... they know it's quick. So yes I do agree if you debadge it, it likely won't get as much attention. As is though, it's really only a sleeper to the average joe driving his camry who's thinking about anything other than cars.

But generally I guess what I'm getting at is you have a choice how much your car stands out. A red, blue, yellow, orange etc M340i with it's badge still on and M Performance CF parts is gonna stand out big time. A mineral gray debadged M340i.. I honestly think far fewer people will notice it. Either way for OP my advice is still the same, I will never race anyone on the street, if some other guy wants to risk going to jail because they see a BMW badge and just HAVE to race, that's their thing. Not mine. |
