Car manufacturers can alter the tread width of their specific tires to optimize it for the chassis. As I posted previously, the 275/285 PS4S used on the M5/8 are 9.2" and 10.1" inches wide respectively.

A couple of things to take away from reading this entire thread
1) BMW M division is intentionally moving driver's away from a manual transmission by lowering the horsepower available on the G80 compared to the Automatics 2) The driver is wearing racing gloves 3)The driver is German therefore not enthusiastic 4) You can get an Automatic Competition 4 wheel drive version, or a Automatic RWD or an manual RWD but not the same HP. I think, I don't know I forgot. I have been driving BMW's for 27 years and really enjoyed most of them. It is a business and BMW is no different, people are always going to complain. Here is my .02 cents worth of complaining since I am a dinosaur. The M3 could look like an as*h*ole in the front but if it had 480 horsepower with the manual transmission (basically for us dinosaurs since the poster who brought up this dinosaur thing probably doesn't know how to drive one) and HYDRAULIC STEERING I would be the first on line to buy. |

Speccing taller but effectively equal to 265/35-19 tread width would be an odd choice, "artificially" narrowing, not in keeping with what M seem to be indicating re front axle and tire grip. But we'll see.

Didn't the F10 M5 which had a manual have more torque than that?

Still, at 442lb-ft, the S58 is still below that 480lb-ft quoted limit.

OE PSS 275/35-19 rear was 9.6" tread width btw. Sticking more than that on the front end is probably wishful thinking on my part. But it depends upon their reference points. If they're paying attn to American road + track car successes, and care to compete, they're going to throw some rubber at the problem. The latest GT350 is an 11.8" section width front. 10.6" tread width front on the SS 1LE. Etc.

Maybe we can hope for an effective square setup, with the different nominal sizes just to differentiate the front and rear spec tire.

Agree with you. They had manual on the E6x and F1x M5/M6 in North America, but that was the answer BMW gave.

Alot of hate for this engineer, who clearly is not practiced on camera, just trying to give fans another tidbit, another look at the car in motion, before the reveal....

The weight of the car make no difference whatsoever. I understand we're a forum of passionate enthusiasts but keep in mind the guys taking it to the gym and then grocery shopping and then out for date night is never going to feel the difference. The M3 is a sports sedan. Not a sports car. |

I think that the other lux-lite guys making drivers cars definitely have the classic ultimate driving machine concept in their sights. Cadillac came SO CLOSE. Genesis will either season the recipe into perfection or spill salt all over it. Watch out for the next Mazda6, rumored to be RWD with an inline-6!!
