2023 m340 vs 2024 m440

If you were to choose between getting a new m340 or a m440 coupe which would you choose and why?

I just made this choice. I chose an M440i GC coupe X-drive for the following reasons...some personal...some based on equipment.

>You can option laser lights with the M440i GC...you can only get standard LEDs on an M340i. Headlights are important to me.

>You can select 19 inch non-RFT all season tires with an M440i GC...with M340i you are stuck with those terrible RFTs.

>with M440i GC when you select 19 inch RFTs you get a staggered set up. With M340i you get a square set up. I like wider rear tires.

> with M440i GC I could order M adaptive suspension as a stand alone $550 item. My dealer said that was no longer a stand alone option on M340i.

>M4440i GC comes with power tail gate, HK sound, and wireless charging as standard...M340i these cost extra. Dealer wasn't sure if M340i could even get a power tailgate. It was unavailable for a very long time.

>LCI deleted items...looks like with the M340i the BMW cost engineers took out a lot of the extras...puddle lights...interior sunglass box...neon cabin lighting...I'm sure they will do the same to the M440i GC LCI next year.

But basically really wanted the laser lights and the non RFT 19 inch all season tires in the staggered set up. Just cant get these with M340i.

I have found that non RFT all seasons have more than 2X the tread life of those miserable RFTs.

So I figured I'm saving a chunk of change on NOT having those miserable 19 inch RFT all season run flats that come with the M340i. I had them on my 2016 F30 340i Xdrive...lasted less than 10,000 miles :-(

Which one do you prefer? For me it was a no-brainer, I was in love with the looks of 3 LCI. Just pick the one you like more, they're similar in a lot of ways.

I'm not a fan of the 4 series exterior. Loving the 3 LCI looks.

This is very subjective. Not exactly what you are asking - you mentioned coupe, not gran coupe...but having recently sold my M340i, I bounced among replacing it with another M340i, or an M440i Gran Coupe or an X4 M40i.
I chose the M440 GC. For me, I don't frequently have people in the back seats, and of the three, I think the GC looks the best while having very similar performance numbers and also giving a comfortable and quiet ride. People still complain about the new grilles, but (my opinion) that's way overblown. The new grilles look modern. The old style smaller grilles look like something you'd see on the prior generation. (I'm not hating on the smaller style grilles, they look good too, but to me they make a car look dated.)
The GC's hatchback is great for throwing your golf clubs in - when I had the M340, I always had to remove my driver from the bag and put that in separately, that always drove me crazy. Buy a big flat screen TV? It fits in the GC's hatch no problem where getting it into the M340's trunk was just not happening. The X4, I could not get used to its looks. Oddly proportioned and it's still an SUV at the end of the day, and everyone and their brother drives an SUV (if they are not driving a pickup ).
You mentioned a coupe though. I thought a bit about that too. The best scenario for a 2 door coupe is you very rarely have rear seat occupants (or they are still young/small), you don't need much trunk/cargo space, and your knees are still young enough to not make scary noises when you have to get down lower to get in and out. Also, and I am sure others will disagree, I myself do not like the look of the 2 door coupe. Too soft and rounded looking to me. Reminds me of a softer looking Mustang.

Why is the adaptive so important to you? I just picked up a m440 (non grand) coupe and it has that but I haven't really used it yet. All comfort sport and eco for me so far.

I think they meant adaptive suspension, which literally everyone agrees is a must have option for the 3/4 series.

I'm in Europe so the equipment between those for me might vary a lot. I can talk about the G26 Gran Coupe as I've never had interest in 2-door cars. The reasons for me were the following:

- Oddly, the Gran Coupe had a lower price here, spec for spec.

- The hatch opens up like the one in an SUV. I find sedan trunks to be too impractical.

- I like the design quite a bit better. The 2-door G22s with the chrome grill are quite the ugly ducklings but the G26's grill is slightly different and when you get it black with the M Sport Pro package and, especially, if you slap a license plate on top of it, it becomes quite the looker, to be honest. The G20 is looking sharp and nice but feels extremely reserved and outdated for my taste.

- This is perhaps not the case for the G22s but the G26 is known to handle more comfortably and that's something that I insisted on. I'm coming from a larger vehicle focused on comfort and live in a country that is not known to have the best of roads, so a G26 with the adaptive dampers was a no-brainer for me.

- Laser headlights, which are quite the upgrade in Europe. Not sure if that's that much of an upgrade in the US, apart from the DRLs on G22/G26 looking extremely bad without them.

Some good points presented here, but a few small corrections:

You can order a staggered RFT 19" setup for the 340 and the equipped tires will be 225/40 & 255/35. Wireless charging is now standard. The adaptive suspension is available as a standalone option for $550. All of this is true for the US market, at least. Other regions may differ.

I think exterior styling will be the biggest factor between a 3 or 4GC purchase for the majority of buyers. The interior in the 4 is a small step up, though.
