Sounds like more BS to me, the dealer doesn’t have any additional control over your leased vehicle, the lease contract is with BMWFS or other 3rd party lender.

This has been laying around in my garage since before I had the car. Finally took the original one off. Don't think I want this one on anymore. Any thoughts?

Not sure if it’s just the photo lighting but the all black one looks terrible. Looks like an X and a big black blob next to it.

Dump it. Can’t even see anything except the X. I’d go without the XDrive badge.

Prepping for Roebling at the end of the month. Swapped my Titan 7s with the OEM wheels/tires and got the alignment checked. Also scheduled 3x dyno pulls with Night Owl Performance before the track day.

This sort of thing can be used on so many different levels of good vs evil in terms of just a simple track and recovery by bank should there be a default on a lease, but can also be maliciously used to find the car and steal it if someone at the dealership is so inclined to do (ie inside job). There’s so many thefts happening with these cars, the last thing you need is someone else with a hand in your pocket knowing where your car is. I know you said no to the lawsuit thing, but if there is nothing in your paperwork, you at the very minimum owe it to your fellow BMW enthusiasts to do something about it. Dealers shouldn’t be allowed to do this without full disclosure and your up front knowledge. Pretty sure you wouldn’t have bought and driven the car off the lot if you knew this was on there. You got lucky just stumbling across it.

Perhaps more people on here should take a peek under their dashes and see what’s up.
I took delivery of a new X3M and found that dealer had installed a tracking device.

I didn’t think much about it at first, but then when I logged in to activate it (after I had been told that it wasn’t collecting data until activation), the service revealed a log of everywhere the vehicle had been since dealer took possession and installed it.

So then I decided to look into the company behind the device. It turned out to be some sketchy company in SoCal. At this point it all dawned on me—this rando company (and anybody who has access to their systems) could now track my every move, when I’m away from home, etc.

At this point I went apeshit on the dealer, who basically lied to me about every aspect of the device and service. I then went to BMWNA, who confirmed that installing ANY THIRD PARTY electronics on a car prior to sale is strictly forbidden by their dealer terms, AND voids the warranty on the vehicle. When I brought this to the dealers attention, they tried to assuage me with assurances that THEY would honor any warranty issues for the car. Right. I pointed out that would be a real challenge if I moved or if they went out of business before the end of the warranty, for example.

More lies ensued, at which point I demanded a new replacement vehicle since this install couldn’t be undone and hence warranty was void. They resisted, at which point I threatened to take the matter to the state Attorney General. Keep in mind they had been installing these devices in hundreds of new vehicles over a period of years. I pointed out the massive breach of customer privacy this represented and the liability it would represent if this came to light.

Next day they took the vehicle back and had a new one for me in a week.

The last part makes sense because leasing companies do that, but the dealership really shouldn’t be adding the trackers to all cars without knowing which will or won’t be leased. I dunno about you, but I wouldn’t want my stock harnesses tapped into like that. It’s bullshit blanket tactics on all the cars without disclosure.

I don’t lease, but if I did, I sure as fuck would pull this shit out myself and they can suck it. Don’t need them tracking where and when I go anywhere. I don’t agree with that and if it was a part of the leasing agreement and divulged I wouldn’t lease it. Their loss, not mine.

Thanks for following up and bringing this up to everyone’s attention.

Exactly, this is bullshit. More people need to probably start looking under their dashes and file complaints with BMWNA about all the dealers who are pulling this bs, ESPECIALLY since it’s apparently forbidden by their dealer contracts with BMW. I would love to see some dealer licenses pulled due to this. It’s crap and like you said, it’s invasion of privacy… not to mention, how much data these boxes are farming from you and could easily be used to find and steal the car as well by nefarious individuals who can get their hands on the location data by either buying it or stealing it.

I know you probably didn’t want to burn bridges with your dealer, but I would have gotten a the new car and still turned them over for it. Imagine how many people have no idea about this.

How many rattling noise threads do we see each day? 😂 That’s how this guy ended up finding the box. Sheesh!

They don’t. IND sells them but they are “hand made” — combining the standard floating center caps and the heritage center caps. I made these myself with some inspiration from a couple of other forum members. Bit of a pain, but well worth the savings.

Snagged one! Back on the BMW side of the house, don't want to count how many this car is over the last few years...wish I'd tried it out sooner. Would take this thing over my M5 Comp's or RS5's all day, excellent car. Not enough for me in the LCI that I cared to wait to try and find one, actually like the headlights in the pre-LCI more.

Brand news '24 xDrive Comp, tints and ppfs ASAP, otherwise not sure I'm going to touch this one <chefs kiss>
