Looking forward to it. Wish I could see lap for lap telemetry RUS vs. BOT as he learns the car.

Both of these.
I think, baring an accident, he will do well but not win the race. Free practice 2 and 3 will give us an indication of his potential. Nerves might get the best of him, at least at the beginning of the race.

This might be a weekend for #33.

So great!! Back when F1 was "affordable." 35+ cars would show up for a race when there were only 30 spots or 28 spots. The slower cars had to pre-qualify to even be able to take place in qualifying. This is where the 107% rule got its start!!

Good times!!

All we need now are qualifying engines or Grenades!! I'm gonna go and cry now!! Lol!!

Back in those days it seemed like anyone could rock up with a Cosworth engine in the back of an F1 car and try to prequalify.
I just watched a bit of the 1988 Monaco qualifying on youtube...those were some great looking cars, wide and low and sounded epic. Must have been pretty tough to drive with a stick shift.

I'm glad they chose a current F1 driver, but how quickly can he adapt to the W11? The opportunity can certainly be double edged. If he qualifies 0.5s behind Bottas and doesn't have a good race, won't the shine (and his reputation of an up and coming star) take a big hit?

Personally I hope he does well and at least can match Bottas.

While I was initially disappointed to hear about Hamilton testing positive, it's certainly going to be a most interesting weekend to see someone else in the car.

I know, right?!

And the smaller teams ran the same chassis for a couple of years. Even longer chassis runs back in the 70s. Ah the good old days!!!

BOT benefits from chassis to place him second, but has been given his spot based on the relationship with Toto (his manager).

Others on the grid would yield better results, but aren't given the chance for reasons stated above.
Yep. Lewis’ skill and experience couple to Bottas’ “lack of” is tough to overcome. Plus I don’t think he has that alpha mentality. Look back to the Rosberg days, Lewis may be a better and more accomplished driver heading into that relationship but there were tussles cause Rosberg didn’t back down, whereas Bottas is coming up and doesn’t want to ruffle feathers relegating him into a clear 2nd driver.

My gut tells me he’ll be right there in the end considering the car and the lack of corners this time around.

In the 60's when i began following NHRA drag racing, the same premise....the dragsters and funny cars would qualify for 16 spots....the others were put on the trailer and they went home.

I follow NHRA championship level drag racing today and have developed a friendship with Antron Brown, a 3 time Top Fuel national champion.

The Top Fuel cars are just insane. Any car you see before you hear and burns your eyes and throat when they pass by you is unworldly haha.

Drag racing never really caught on in the UK in the same way as you guys...which is a bit of a shame.
There are tracks but its a sport that never quite made it onto mainstream TV.

Yeah. The only time I've ever been afraid at a race track was at a drag race. They were shooting 4 up, I was standing 30 feet behind and the vibrations going through my body were insane. I still get the willies thinking about it. And watching near the finish line is no better. An object going by at aircraft cruise speeds on the ground is so unsettling that I don't have the words to express it.

Keep in mind that in college I helped test catapults before they went to the fleet so seeing a 60,000 dead load go by at 150 mph was no big deal. Drag racing is another thing, entirely.

In 2018, I was invited to be with a Top Fuel dragster team as a guest when the NHRA crazy boys and girls came to the Seattle area. As MK said, I stood behind the beasts at the start line and after my 50+ yrs of spectating from the other side of the fence, I knew it would be insane. It is literally the first time in my life when both cars launched and a massive air blast and sound shock wave hit me and in that nano-second my survival instinct told me to run the other direction because I thought I was going to die in that split second. And....when the beasts do a burn out to heat their tires before they launch, you are pelted with micro-bits of rubber.

Closest I've been close to that sort of theatre (but certainly not even close) were the times we operated on Nato bases often quite near the runway as military jets took off on full afterburner (practising fast response I guess) climbing near vertically a few seconds after takeoff...that was just awesome.
The most noise though was at Charles De Gaulle airport close to the main runway when Concorde took off. Even with your hands tight over your ears that thing really made your brain hurt

Nothing like seeing an F-15 go vertical. It's awe-inspiring.

We also tested traps and the engines on the YF-18 back in the day, as well. Ah the good old days!!

THIS!!!

Your flight instinct kicks in when you are behind the Top Fuel cars. No other explanation will cover it so appropriately!!

These statistics do not appear to be possible, but this is telemetry from Top Fuel dragsters:

-0-100 MPH: .75 seconds (yes....3/4 of a second)
-Instantaneous positive 6 G launch
-0-330 MPH: 3.7 seconds
-330 MPH = 488 feet per second
-NHRA limits fuel category cars (cars using nitromethane fuel) to a 1,000 ft track distance; other categories race to a traditional 1,320 ft distance (1/4 mile)
-Instantaneous negative 6 G deceleration when deploying two parachutes and carbon brakes

We are way off topic, but lets continue with some more facts.
- They consume 1.5 gallons of fuel PER SECOND.
- It takes 900hp just to turn the supercharger
- The rebuild the engines from the ground up after every run (fun to watch in the pits)
