Report: Toyota set to roll out its revolutionary solid-state battery in 2021

This could really be a game changer for EVs. It makes EV's more viable, moving away from Li-On.

The headline and the story are rather different. Not at all clear when Toyota will roll out the new solid state batteries, certainly does not sound like 2021 although that would be great.

Most car makers have been working on this.

Damn. Will be interesting to see the prototype!

The fact that this tech has gone from the lab to a possible working prototype is a huge leap forward!

Agreed, but this was just announced today.

Better article:

Unfortunately, it looks like it will rely on Li as one of the elements required.

I assume this will be from an 800V and high amperage charging? If this solid state battery could store this much energy so rapidly, wouldn't there be a great amount of heat generated?

I'm reminded of tiny laptops and phones that exploded with low voltage 2 amp charging.

What clever thermodynamic trickery is in this system?

Yep. The reason: QuantumScape.

https://www.google.com/search?q=quantumscape

They've got high profile names like Bill Gates, VW, and JB Straubel in their corner, and Toyota - who actively campaigned against EVs in their advertising, but who is now backpedaling and realizing they need to get serious - wants in on some of the hype.

Toyota is also showing their new generation Mirai FCEV this week too.

Expect a lot more of this type of drama as we March toward mass market EV acceptance. Not everyone is going to be alive at the end of this battle, and big players in the traditional market are just posturing to stay in the game.
