There is a good app/website called Zap which allows you to see where charge points are. The BMW one built into the car has very limited knowledge of actual points although it does try and indicate if there is a free space... https://www.zap-map.com Last edited by tricky6; 09-28-2019 at 04:20 AM.. |

So having done my week and returned home here is my current average. Hasn't fallen by as much as I thought it might and averaging 88 MPG over 500 miles isn't bad, almost half as electric. I still have 130 miles of fuel powered range left (about 1/3rd of a tank).
Economy coming back from Manchester yesterday wasn't as good as the way up. Averaged about 62 MPG but the weather was awful. This revealed an bit of an issue with DA. If it can't see the road lanes or they come and go it's better turning it off. In torrential rain it can't see the lanes and its annoying as it constantly disengages (with a gong and yellow flashing lights built into the steering wheel) and then re-engages. Normal rain is ok though. So I reckon my Mondeo would have done about 55 MPG and I only get 550-600 miles out of a substantially bigger fuel tank. Not bad at all... |

Just done my first "normal" commute into the office from Wiltshire to Bracknell, about 46 miles each way. I've switched to l/100km to get more granular readings but this is indicating 176MPG (1.6l/100km). Fully charged at the start and at work. Route is nearly all delimited A road (20%) + motorway (75%) + very small amount of 30mph at each end (2 miles each way I'd guess). Pretty much stuck to 60mph for the whole trip. Have to say this is far better than I was expecting when ordering the car. Figured I might get 90MPG if I was lucky...

For a car that does 0-60MPH in about 5.5 seconds! That is some way from the <20MPG I once got out of my 2003 M3 which wasn't that much faster ;-) Have you adapted your driving style at all for economy or just driven normally? I'm in mega-eco mode at the moment just to see what is possible but will probably get bored soon ;-) Only 300 miles until I hit my 1200 mile run in period...

I’m lucky to have driven an i8 (briefly for about 10 miles) and also a Ferrari F40 (around 100 miles). They are both faster but have the same hold onto the wheel “thing”! My M3 was fast but a lot of it was top of the revs so you didn’t get the “jolt” on acceleration. The 330e just goes when you plant it... This may of course be a reflection of the fact I’ve not had a “fast” car for quite a while... ;-) Last edited by tricky6; 10-01-2019 at 11:21 AM.. |

I didn't drive past 4000 rpm yet, up to about 4000 rpms it feels ok but not fast, does it make a difference in the high rpms (4500-6000)? My 1M feels way faster to be honest, maybe my expectations were too high |

Are you still happy with it? Personally it is WAY better than I thought it would be... My HK stereo is also getting run in and is sounding a lot better than it did on day 1. A few "funnies" with the brakes at time when it brakes for you, then releases and you then need to brake on top and it gets a bit jerky...doesn't happen that often... Sat Nav live traffic is way behind (CarPlay) Google Maps on accuracy but at least I can do either. My Connected Drive apps seems to have partially disconnected and I wished I hadn't signed up to BMW Music as I've lost Spotify and can't find a way to disconnect it. Aside from that, happy days indeed! :-) |

I agree, the brake can feel very strange, specially when going for a complete stop in a downhill. |

Have you heard the new 320i/330i? They do sound sporty and we are talking about the same petrol engine. BMW always said that this new 330e was supposed to be a fun/performance hybrid, and that's why it has the xtraboost function, so why not?

The 320i burbles slightly so surprised that the 330e doesn’t. Have you tried from exterior? As The g20 is so insulated you don’t tend to hear them on the interior.

It's probably not coded in for the 330e as in the 320/330 |

Not being critical here, simply interested in how you guys are doing with costs and consumption... My driving profile is looking like it can possibly work with PHEV, if there is the 40+km electric range.
I see a high weekly mileage and just 49.9mpg. Am I right in the electric only figure being 220.1 miles? If so, doesn't it still make a diesel, the engine of choice for economy? Yes, I know there is more to it than that, but from a financial position is it going to make sense long term? |

Diesel is still the most economical fuel for higher than average mileage cars. Assuming similar driving styles....

I've averaged about 65MPG on the long trips (clearly the longer the trip the worse it's going to be), I get 165MPG+ on my office trip and generally on full electric for local trips so no fuel usage. I'm getting around 650-700 miles out of a tank (only 40 litres). My 2016 Mondeo (210BHP twin-turbo diesel) averaged 52MPG over the last 13k miles, probably driven a little less gently but not much. That would do about 550 miles out of a 55 litre tank. I'm sure a 320d could better 65MPG over 175 miles (by a bit but I bet not a lot) but as soon as you get to the other end and (in my case) potter around locally in traffic between client/hotel etc. for the week the average diesel MPG will drop like a stone whereas in the 330e it will improve, if you can keep it charged up. A few caveats: 1. I'm very much driving in eco mode 98% of the time. I'm happy sitting at around 60MPH on the motorway in which case it will sit in electric mode, while there is charge left. Sit at 70MPH+ and you'll be in petrol mode. Sit at 90 and I doubt the electric-ness will help you much :-) 2. I can charge at home & office (for free) and try to make sure I can charge at my client/hotel (again usually free). 3. I've moved to an off peak EV electricity tariff at home which is 1/3rd the price of normal electricity. It gives a charge window from 12:30am to 4:30am, more than enough for a full charge (from a dedicated home charge unit). Costs me about 50p to fully charge the car. So I guess it comes down to journey type, driving style + ability to frequently charge. A lot of the motor press only position PHEV's as good for "those with short commutes" but I've been really impressed at my MPG so far and I do 2k miles/month, somewhat above average. There has been more than a fair share of Xtra Boost moments since it was run in so I'm not a total angel :-) Hope this helps. Last edited by tricky6; 10-08-2019 at 07:17 AM.. |
