Preheating G21

I am looking to buy a G21 318i or 320i. With all this cold weather it made me wonder about preheating. Is this only available on the 330e?

Similar to this topic. Requires the engine on to heat.

Thanks. Shame that in the U.K. then we can’t remote start and we don’t have the option of the auxiliary heater so no preheating for a 320i

I preheated my G21 330e this morning. But fuggwit that I am, I forgot that the cable wasn’t plugged in, so it all came out of the battery. It stole 20% of my electric range for a 30 min preheat!

That’s a lot of power used. That’s probably 2-3kwh then for that 30 min heat

Still better than scraping ice off the windows and getting into a cold car though. I'm happy to spend a bit of petrol money in lieu of battery for that.

You could always stick the preheat on 60 mins before you leave and then after the 30 mins preconditioning and ice defrosted, it has 30 mins to charge back up. If it's plugged in obviously.

Unfortunately my granny charger cable seems to be inadequate to preheat and not have a little impact on the battery/range, but guessing a wall box wouldn't have that issue.
Still, a small price to pay.

That's about it, electric heater can draw over 5kWh. (Rated up to 5.5kW ± 10 %). Plus the fan draw as well.

As post above, preheating in cold temperatures is a high demand consumer. Plus keeping the cabin warm while we drive.

This is where the ICE scores, (once running and having waste heat), we can 'harvest' it as cabin heat.

Plus the steering wheel and seat heaters. It’s must add up to quite a bit.

At this time of year it’s always amusing to drive to my dad’s (10 miles ish) and arrive with a still frosted bonnet. Big clue that the engine hasn’t been on.

Which is why I think it’s bonkers that things like oil changes are still based on miles driven, not engine miles. Even with condition based servicing.
