I asked my dealer that same question today. And the answer was no. They were happy for me to keep asking them for progress though.

Unfortunately you can't. If you have your order number the online live talk genius will provide an update but I found the info. pretty generic.

The genius will also keep saying things like “that’s a beautiful car”, “what a great colour” etc. Perhaps they don’t realise they are talking to British people!

VIN number

Should imagine it would be quite annoying to be constantly bombarded by over eager impatient customers wanting to know exact status of car. Its been tough holding off doing it myself.

A quick question regarding the order process do dealers / BMW send through the VIN number etc prior to delivery?

I was told by a genius that you HAVE to get the VIN via the dealer, the genius can't tell you. (I don't know whether that's can't or won't). Interestingly, they said you can find the VIN by speaking to ANY dealer, you don't have to go to the one you're dealing with for the order.

Paul you don't need the VIN number, just the order number between the dealer and BMW AG. That allows you to follow the cars build.
As soon as the car moves to build stage it is issued a VIN number. That you can only get by calling the dealer. After that has been issued within perhaps a week you can download your own user manual. You can also then go to BMW.VIN, input your last 7 digits and get a full spec listing on your car.

Hope that helps.

Perhaps it wasn't clear, but I realised that. What I was saying is that, with the order number, the Genius won't/can't give you the VIN, once the vehicle has gone into production. They refer you back to the dealer network to get this data. It's just a shame that while you're having a session with the genius they can't give you the VIN too.

Hope that's clearer.

That’s quite a retrograde step, if I’m understanding this correctly. My G21 is due week 8(week beginning 22 Feb) according to my dealer but with my previous 2017 3 Series I was able to track its progress, even watch its trip across the North Sea. A tad nerdy I’d admit but we’re all more or less guilty of that on this site!

You can still do all that but you need to know the current code the car is on.

If you want to talk about Nerdy, I knew exactly the boat my car was on between Cuxhaven and Southampton and received an email from the captain with an arrival estimate for Southampton!
