Exhaust valve acting really strange

So, I had my car updated (330i to 2019/11) and noticed it got noticeably quieter. Seems the exhaust valve isn't opening in any drive mode now? I coded sport+ back in and it only opens in neutral/park or reverse...

I read on other threads that their cars have become quieter on updating iDrive (mainly m340is). Sucks that it’s the same in the 330i. Many people have lost their pops and burbles too.

I really hope it isn't a change forever, as I can hear and see that the valve just stays closed in Drive or M/S.

2019 330i, USA. I just updated to 2019/11. I believe it is .40 but I will check later.

I'm taking it to my local dealer to have them look at my comfort access on Friday, so I'll get them to see if this is intentional or not. My car still pops and bangs, and the exhaust is wilder than before in Neutral/Park.

I know the burble/pop reduction effected all of the cars in the EU market, I hope to god they don't do it here.

You can on BimmerCode now I'm fairly sure.

I used ESys and LauncherPro as I like to have a nose around. Found some interesting model designations lol

Let me dig around. Weirdly, in my bimmercode android app, I can’t seem to find the option for advanced coding, unlike the ones for the iPhone app. Idk if it’s only on my phone or for android in general.
Do you remember what all you changed to get sport+?

I disconnected my valve, best thing I ever did. Now I can actually hear the exhaust. I've gotten some comments on the sound being very good for a 4cyl.

I agree. It sounds really good for a luxury 2.0 4 banger. I had a B9 A4 before this, and while it was a good car, I hated the stock exhaust.

To my knowledge the valve is closed for a couple of minutes to warm up quicker - so if keeping the valve open has an impact on the sound it should be with cold engine only ? Did I miss something?

Hmm as far as I know, the valve stays closed most of the time unless you rev/load the engine past a certain point.

Should have a look - if you are right , yes it makes sense to block in open position

Correct. At certain temps after a cold start, the valve will remain closed in sport mode until the engine reaches a desired temp. You can very clearly hear it pop open/closed after a minute or two.

Yeah, I've been looking into it and even Sport+ isn't changing anything.

Before my exhaust was open basically all the time in Sport+, now its not open at all. I have some pops, but they are only from one exhaust lol

Maybe an issue with the valve then?

I have a feeling it's either the valve sticking, or when they flashed my car something went wrong. Then again they also did 3 different service bulletins and the camera recall lol.

I'm really lucky to not need a new motor too, given my car was in the affected build period.

How did you do this? Any lights on the dash after it?

No lights. It simple enough, disconnect the connector plug from the valve in the rear.

To do this though follow these steps:

1. Car is warm
2. Place in Sport, wait for valve to open.
3. Disconnect plug from valve motor.
4. (Optional/recommended) Tape the end of the plug with elec tape or something similar.
5. I reconnected it to the motor and made sure it was snug. It protects it from the elements.

And thats it, the valve will always be open. Its easier than the older vacuum ones.
