Those things are so cool! I wanna watch them in person. I watched it on Planet Earth and it was pretty cool. I've heard that it's some of the sun's radiation radiating in the sky.

Yeah its solar winds (radiation) that slips past the earths magnetic field that is interacting with nitrogen and oxygen.

I wonder if it would freak people out when they're high. I nominate Kiemyster to go there and report back.

Cool.
I'm from Norway myself, but I've never actually seen the Aurora borealis myself, because I live in the southern part and you have to be further north to see it.

I'd love to see an Aurora too, but I did think my one total eclipse was pretty cool. Back in the summer between 7th and 8th grade my dad and I made a trip of it and headed up into Canada. Weather was coming in on the day of the eclipse and we had to race to get ahead of it. I'll always remember blasting along in some back road in the northern Gaspe peninsula in our old Chrysler V-8 deathtrap while out the window I watched the partial eclipse start and the clouds recede. We got a bit ahead of the clouds a few minutes before totality and watched a beautiful clear eclipse from a turnout on the road. It started to rain about a minute after totality ended.

Anyway, not as photographically stunning as these aurora pics, but certainly worth seeing if you ever get the chance.

I wonder what it'd be like photographing a solar eclipse. Does one need special equipment or preparation?

For the total eclipse you can view directly and use an ordinary camera (though a long telephoto lens would help).

That said, you CANNOT safely view or photograph a partial solar eclipse without special filters. The problem is that as a partial eclipse deepens toward totality the scene appears dark and you lose your aversion response (tendency to quickly look away and close down your pupil when exposed to a bright light). But until the eclipse is total, a small sliver is still just as bright as the full sun - and staring at that small sliver without an aversion response can permanently damage your vision.

You can buy the appropriate filters at any astronomy shop, or you can project the image of the eclipse onto a card with any camera lens and safely, but indirectly, view the eclipse that way.

Saw these once from an airplane on a night flight to Germany. Very cool. Like lightning, except long and wide and colorful. Those pics above took some serious timing, though. Nice work.
