Last time it worked was in December as far as I remember. I do weekly commutes of 150 km, mixed traffic. So must normally work ... And yes, for daily commute I want it on. In weekends I switch to sport where it can stay off.

Yes, I do get the symbol that auto stop/start on the dash that indicates that the engine will not turn off. No engine modifications or coding at all.

What does the efficient dynamics page say? It usually gives a reason for why the ASS has started the engine, e.g.
Intention to turn ( left blinker and radar detects no car in front) Driver request (I tapped brake weird) Climate request (wants to heat cabin more) .. I'm betting there are others for charging system faults |

I contacted the dealer this morning and they will have a look on the 6th of March as I do need to visit them anyway for the installation of my M-Performance bumper.

I have noticed that the Start Stop requires a certain level of battery charge.
In the winter with lots of short trips or trips where all the electrics are working (heated seats, heated steering wheel, rear window and blowers etc. the efficient dynamics do not seem to keep up with the charging requirements. I have noticed this on most of BMWs since my 435i 2014. I then bought a battery maintainer for when my car sat idle during business trips. As an example that I have had with my 330i. A few weeks ago during a cold and wet period I drove to the airport 35 miles with very little braking required on the journey and had heated window, seat heating, wipers, steering wheel all on, and on my arrival to the car park I switched the engine off while I made a call. Warning came on 'battery charge very low please start engine'. I had noticed start stop was not working but put it down to the cold and wet, not producing the correct conditions. 4 days later I came back late at night, luckily car started ok and I got home without further warnings. The next morning I put my battery maintainer on the car, the cycle was very low which usually means little state of charge. Left it for 24 hours and then drove for a short journey and yes Start/Stop was active again. Me I have coded this out on my last few cars but I really find this version to not be intrusive enough to bother, definitely an improvement on versions before. |

Thanks for your valuable post Sussex_G20. My guess is indeed a lower battery level. I do a lot of motorway journeys without much braking and with all electric systems on. No indication on low battery level, but let the dealership confirm this.

I thought battery discharged faster when you drive slow in stop and go traffic or similar compared to when you’re cruising on the motorway?

Think of the alternator as a smart alternator and if the battery is on the low side then it will charge as necessary to get it back to a decent level, regardless of the type of driving this as opposed to just charging when you have taken your foot off the gas.

Battery has quite a low SoC for the charging system to take on a 'conventional' mode. Even then, it only brings the battery back up to a certain SoC, then reverts back to intelligent alternator control, with specific charging parameters. |

Went to the dealer today and they confirmed the battery is on the low level. One of the causes can be that I do drive most often in ecopro mode. The advice is to drive more in different modes. On the 3th of April my car has to go in for the 03/2020 Idrive 7 software update (and a recall action). Let’s see If I’m able to charge the battery more by then.

Went car went in for SW update, the dealer charged the battery and ASS worked fine for the next day; and then went off again... Now, I have come to live with the fact that their system is not as intelligent as it should be |

It is intelligent enough to switch off the stop-start function, as your driving profile doesn't give the battery enough charge, and/or your energy demands are high. The fact it keeps the engine running means more charge time and lessens demand on the battery. |

I am not an expert on the system's details but a 'smarter' system would see that its level is low (maybe no instantly but tracked over a period) and would (saying) couple the engine more to charge battery |
