I doubt this, the US spec X4 has the turn light at the bottom under the taillight just like on the G20.

Personally I think its the stupidest design to ever exist. Like hey, let me turn your one brake light into a turn signal also, especially when we live in a world where people are too lazy to go out and replace a $2 brake light bulb on their 2003 Nissan Altima. I've always appreciated the separate lighting. It looks better and feels safer for me.

There's no $2 brake or turn signal bulbs on BMW's. They are all LED's that's "supposed" to last forever (or at least until the warranty runs out) and also irreplaceable (unless you're referring to replacing the whole light assembly).

I was making a reference to other vehicles on the road. I always see people in older vehicles, sometimes newer vehicles that have burnt out halogen bulbs (Not every manufacturer uses LED bulbs for everything yet), and cba to go to a local auto parts store to get a pack of bulbs for $2

F30 non LED package gets those halogen bulbs lul

Sorry to bump an old thread but I figure some folks might still want the answer to why the US has a different version of taillights as oppose to the rest of the world for most BMWs.

In America, the brake light and rear turn signal must each have a lit lens area of at least 50 cm2 (7¾ in2). The American regulation calls this lit lens area "EPLLA" for Effective Projected Luminous Lens Area. This minimum-size requirement doesn't exist outside America.

Hence the need for two strips of brake light coverage in US spec vehicles.

By the way, the rest of the world gets amber color rear turn signals and the US spec gets only the color red because of this size requirements, not because BMW likes alternating colors.

Canada gets red also, so NA Spec

this. surprised ppl didn't know this in general.

That's why the audi's have the progressive led bar sequence but still has a prehistoric bulb lighting up under it at the same time. Looks so stupid lol

I agree. I coded out our SQ5 from that stupidity right away and also installed ROW Spec tail lights with proper amber turn signals.

We need to do the same for the G20.

Has anyone figured out how to code them to act like ROW cars?

I will most likely get Euro Spec tails with amber turn signals but need to figure out the coding details 1st. (and part numbers for the tails)

I wonder which coder will figure out a way to code European lights.

I had to figure this one out via trial and error on the Audi which is a coding I am familiar with.....BMWs on the other hand, I am not too familiar with besides the basic app based codings.

We need to code out the brake lights so they do not function when the turn signal is on.

If you go look at your car, you will see that brake lights also flash when you turn on your turn signals.

On the F1X cars the whole design was different. Everything was independent as they should be which allowed for a plug and play swap.

Ah, I have an E9X M3. My brake light doesn't flash with my turn signal. I also have the Euro Turn Signals. They look fantastic.

If Bimmercode can access the REM module in the G series vehicles, then I can give you a rough guide on how to code the ROW taillights.

LMK

The parameters and hex values didn't change from the F series, it's just sometimes they get rearranged in different folders.

I didn't get a chance to test the theory in the brand new loaner car I just had because the modules wasn't yet available in Bimmercode but that was months ago.

Does anyone have an update on this? I was just notified that I will be stationed in the UK, and will need the Euro spec tail lights to register my car.
