I've had people in 330i's or base C class try to race me though I have a 340. They don't seem to know what I have versus what they have.

I did exactly this, as well as replaced the front grill with a chrome slatted one. Quite sleepy

You're probably right. I guess I never associated color with speed, so it's hard for me to imagine that others might think the exact same car in a different color performs differently.

Regardless of the color, if I see a c class, I think - is that a c43 instead of a c300? ok then it's quick. If I see a 3 series, is that an m340 instead of a 330? If I see a Ferrari is that a testarossa which I can spank or is it a 488 that would make me look like I was walking instead of driving?

But I guess for the average non car enthusiast who wouldn't know the difference even if it did have its badges on, a sunset orange or portimao blue might "look faster".

Although to be fair, my last car was an "iridium blue" Q50 RS400 which not a single person tried to race in the 3 years that I had it, and my current car is a dravit grey.

Question for all of you though. And this is a genuine question, I'm not being facetious -

What's the point of debadging? I used to think it was done because those who didn't have the higher spec car didn't want people to know they had the lower spec car (i.e. people who have a 330 don't want people to know it's not an m340) But obviously that's not the case if people with m340's are also debadging.

I played around with a type R on the highway leaving the dealership after I bought it. Nothing since then.

Does anyone else have issues with this? I've never had these issues in another car. Not sure if it's because the car is bight blue, if it's the M340 badge, or just bad luck this weekend. It's my girlfriends daily driver and she has the same issues. We've only had the car for a week. Does removing M340i badge help with this? Trying to decide if we should try putting on a 330i badge or just remove the M?
Ultimately the problem is not yours...it is everyone else's. If you simply pull away from the intersection normally, the idiot who wants to race you will be far away from you. But others will be at peril.

Does it happen at a particular intersection? If so, notify the police. If it randomly occurs everywhere, there is not much you can do.

As to your possible remedy of removing your badging, or even downbadging it, I do like that approach. I am a big believer in sleeper cars anyway.

A few things.

One, it can "hide" how nice / expensive / fast your car is, which can curb unwanted attention (not get rid of it, but lessen it). Even people who don't know cars very well I think can tell the "M" badge means something. I do not have empirical data to back this up but I would guess the presence of the M badge increases aggressive driving near you (including what OP is talking about in this thread), as well as risk of vandalism or theft. I mean, consider that you thought debadging was a way of hiding that you got a "cheaper" car - this is what some owners want. A sleeper, a car that looks like it's not that expensive or fast.

Two, it can be more aesthetically pleasing for some people. I think an M340i xDrive looks a lot cleaner and slicker with both badges removed.

Three, it can definitely sometimes be what you are saying - someone with a 320, 328, 330 etc not wanting people to know that's the car they have and debadging it.

It's not necessarily directly associating color with speed, but rather, a more colorful car being more noticeable and hence garnering more attention, both positive and negative. If someone doesn't even notice your gray BMW they aren't going to race you. But if their eyes are drawn to that speed yellow car, they'll then notice it's a BMW. Also, I strongly believe cars are often a representation of personality, and I think more colorful cars come off as more aggressive or showoff-y (whether or not that person is a showoff or not) and therefore can garner more "challenges".

I think it's a color thing. People tried to race me in my bright red e90 328i... and now in my tuned 335 with a bunch of cosmetic mods (but the cars white) no one bothers me...

Makes sense, so it's more correlation than it is causation. An orange Chevy Spark (they exist) and an orange m340 may garner attention, but once people realize the brand/model of car they'll respond accordingly (more likely to challenge the m340 than the chevy spark).

....no offense to chevy spark owners

Yeah exactly. Also relates to vandalism, that orange Chevy will stand out in a parking lot but no one will care, when someone sees your orange M340 they might be angry / bitter.

Leave the badge alone. Just ignore them. Simple as that. People see BMW's as being fast and they will try and race anything. If you buy a 1.8L Civic, they will still try to race you. Tint your windows and drive your car the way you want.

Are you trolling us? You bought an M340 and are wondering why people want to race? I'm so lost...

I’ve had my M340i two weeks and am coming up to 1200 miles in and no one has tried to race me yet. Maybe we’re a bit more reserved when it comes to these things in the UK.

Well a 3 series doesn't exactly look like a sports car. I've had that happen on rare occasions since driving 3/4 series, but it's not something that I notice regularly.

The last race I had was against a Maserati Ghibli Levante and I had no idea we were trying to race. I was just trying to merge into the left lane from a stoplight (my lane was running out and I needed to get over). I punched it and so did he (I guess he didn't like the fact that I was trying to jump the gun and change lanes). I beat him to the change, but part of me wonders if he let me come over. I'm pretty sure those Maserati's have a lot of power.

Not as much as you might think (around 404hp I think), and they are HEAVY.

Ghibli and Levante are 2 different vehicles. Ghibli is the sedan, Levante is the SUV.

In any case, the m340i is technically quicker to 60 than any variation of the Ghibli and quicker than the Levante unless you're talking about the 590 hp Trofeo.

I am a big fan of sleeper cars. I love the idea of replacing the badge with a 330i badge.

This is the most mind boggling thread. "I bought a M division car with 382hp and idk why people wanna test me" smh... Changing badges? what has this world come to.
