I think the m340i caters to a specific customer. Seems like a good jump from f30 to g20 on this specific model. I’ve always noticed a HUGE difference between the mid tier 3 series model and M3. That’s M magic honestly so can’t wait to drive the g80

Had one as a loaner; it's a nice car.

I'm to extreme; if I did not have my F80
And I was getting one of the new 3 series I'd get a 330i loaded.

I'm either all in M3 or super compliant peppy clean 330i with some super quiet touring all-season tires!

The feeling sound and power of an all in M3 is hard to describe. My brother says the handling defies the law as of physics. On the gas off camber and feeling planted!!!
Nice reply I had the 330l as loaner myself, just rather vanilla for me, also felt larger. Actually thinking about grabbing an M4 before the end of production, followed by an outside chance of an M2 Comp. Just because of the smaller size. On the other hand...Sometimes "Quiet" is not a bad thing.

The current M4 is a real winner with the standard upgrades. If only they flared the front and rear like the M3
For some reason, I heard size?? Whatever it was, not having the M3 bulges was a huge mistake. Other than that....

Out of all the "M's" they just had to place the beaver teeth on the 3 & 4, thanks BMW.

I traded in my f80 for the m340i. They are very different cars, in speed, handling...and luxury. I wanted something quick (tough to beat the raw power of the f80), more luxurious and more comfortable. I feel that's the target BMW is going for, with the m340i. The f80 is a great car if you want raw power. The car pulls like freight train...it just keeps going. I had it for 2 years and only fully opened it up, twice. I don't track my cars, so for me, it was a bit excessive. The m340i provides ample speed and handling, while being comfortable, with great tech features. I just wish it looked as nice as the f80. Once I lower it a bit and add personal touches. I'll enjoy looking at it, more.

He means 335. 355 is the number on the 340i with mppsk (F30). Didn't know there was a torque bump on the 540i, but the bigger car could use more engine, though I guess they want you to shell out for the 550i if you want that. Though M340i power in the 540i would still keep it below the M550 especially after the bump in power.

Good post, many here can't fathom that not everyone wants an M3/M4. For some people the 330i shall suffice and for others it's the M340i. Everybody here knows it's not an M3. Besides, there are many cars that can outperform an M3 so why stop at an M3/M4.

BMW did well in making something for everyone. It's already been established that the M2C is the best drivers car BMW currently makes. Even then, the M2C is not ideal for everyone.

This was my issue too. I liked to M340 for what it was but it just didn't have the presence of the F80 M3. It looked like a nice car but nothing special.

If I was looking for comfort, I'd probably shop a different brand. Good luck with the auto

No point in buying the old M3 if you can get the same numbers with x drive. Also just posted is the KBB comparo with the G70, I want to know what the nuremburg lap times are for the G70 to see a true comparison, I bet this car is faster, jutifying the $6k price difference when comparing starting price of 3.3t to starting price of M340i.
Assuming quarter mile time is the only performance metric you care about.

Ah mppsk, think for non US guys 2018 was the last year one could get it, my was 2019, think given its a US spec car I could still get mppsk...

Regarding torque bump, thought my non mppsk had 450NM, and the newer ones has 500NM

Where do you see f80 numbers?
Power 380 vs 425
Torque 360 vs 405
0-60 4.4s vs 3.9?

2019 is the G20 so no mppsk as it already has more horsepower stock (M340i)

It's something like 4.1 with x drive. On a track with turns the x drive gives it an advantage.

I was just about to say that. We'd need to see the results of both cars driven on the same track with the same driver on the same day. On a high speed track, my money is on the F8X. On a short track, maybe the x-drive might have a small advantage.

I know where I would put my money.

For a daily driver, the M340i is likely to be easier to live with, eg auto rather than DCT, especially when parking. But as a performance car, you all know which is the more thrilling drive.

This thread was about quarter mile times so my comment was regarding that specifically.

I think the F80 would be faster around the track based on my experience driving them both (on the street) but I could be wrong. Who knows.
