From Mercedes to my first BMW!

Hey all, new to this forum!

Long time Mercedes owner, AMG owner and felt after my 16yr old daughter wrote off my C43, that the time had come to possibly switch brands.

The dealer wanted me to get into a 2019 C43, and while the ride was improved somewhat, I very well knew from my previous 2015 C400 and the 2017 C43, that it was only a matter of time before the Contis or Pirelli runflats would destroy the ride quality. I had a 2011 and 2014 C63 models, the last being a 507, and the ride was very livable, other than new rear tires every 7000kms, but what a blast they were!

I liked everything else about the C43. The interior, the power and a very comfortable car to be in, but the ride was an embarrassment to the brand. The dealer was even going to replace the runflats for me with Pilot 4S, and I wavered a bit!

Started out with an S5 Sportback as it is a looker. I took it down some typical roads and was surprised to find a harsh ride, so no go. The BMW was the most refined, and maybe the tires have a lot to do with it, but honestly, this suspension is outstanding. Soaks up imperfections and bumps that I would brace for in the C43.

I have 250kms on it, but find myself more relaxed and the car does not beat me up. I am getting used to it and my only annoyance is getting used to stopping the car smoothly as I find the auto start/stop intrusive...sloppy even. Maybe it is me , but will give it a go before i disable it!

That's it for now, just wanted to introduce myself and happy to be in a BMW!

Welcome, I am assuming you got the M340i? Mine has the stock suspension and ride quality is fine even with the run flat tires. Granted the downsize of the run flats is the diminish performance as well as their inflated cost. The Michelin's are superior in every metric while also being cheaper.

Thanks!

Yes, the M340xi. I didn't even contemplate the runflats. Just curious, what kind of run flats do you have on your car?

I'm sure the ride quality is good even with runflats, as the damping and setup of this car is really , really good.

I have the Pirelli's, this is my first time having run-flats so obviously I was skeptical about the ride being harsh but after test driving I was pleasantly surprised that was not the case. However, sometime next year I will swap them out for the Michelin's since these run flats are not good for performance, they simply don't grip as well especially in the wet.

I too am coming from a '17 C43. I also find the ride pretty harsh, but agree otherwise, it was a comfortable car to be in.... albeit static, or on perfect roads. I went as far as to try non runflats. Luckily it was from a tire shop that allowed me to try them for a period of time before calling it all off. I lost ALL confidence in the corners at speed, and knew I couldn't keep them. The AMG engineers communicated to us (when contacted regarding what non-runflat they would recommend).... that the car was engineered and suspension set up for Runflats ONLY. Otherwise handling and performance will be mitigated. Well that answers that! I didn't choose this car to ease it around corners. I put the harsh Contis back on, and "rode" it out. lol

Now I am awaiting my own special ordered 340i. It's currently at port awaiting ship assignment, and I'm super excited. I test drove an XDrive w/ runflats, and knew right away it was a better, more comfortable ride and setup. I did however choose the All weather tire - with the hope I will not need to replace them at lease end, like I am doing on the AMG. I am also hoping I will not notice too much of a depreciation in performance. I am not tracking the car, so hopefully it won't be an issue.

Enjoy your conversion therapy, on the open road!!

I was also considering a C43, but ended up going with the M340 partly because the C class has yet to be redesigned and the current form has been around for 4 years, so starting to feel dated. Here's to hoping the next gen C class coming out next year fixes a lot of the suspension related issues.

I looked at the Audi as well but couldn't get over the FWD bias on it, just a different feeling. And even that interior is starting to feel a bit dated.

The M340 I test drove just felt the most modern, was comfortable and quiet when it needed to be and was a ton of fun when I wanted it. Hoping to take delivery of mine this week!

Congrats on the new car!

BMW start/stop is notoriously slow, even to the point of being dangerous. I have it programmed to start the car in the last setting (F31 though).

I was coming off a 2017 M3 lease and needed an all wheel drive for the winters in New England. I test drove the '19' C43 AMG because I wanted to try something different, I have leased three BMW's in the past. I really liked some of the features, the improved looks the interior layout and the sound wasn't bad with the exhaust upgrade. What I didn't like was the ride and especially the lease numbers. I ended up with the M340, and I am very happy with the choice.

That is a great point about how the car was engineered with runflats, which is why I wavered on their offer for Pilot 4S instead. Too bad the Michelin Pilot Super Sports do not come in that size, for these cars, because as far as runflats go, and maybe my Z06 MagnaRide shocks have more to do with it, but the car rides extremely well and quiet.

The Contis are the worst tire out there.

I do find the build quality and materials to be better in the BMW. It just feels so different from the C43, mostly in good ways. I think you will be very happy with the ride quality! Exactly, if you don't track these cars, your AS tires are going to be really good. I was lucky that my winters. rim/tire setup from my C43 fit on this car, what a bonus.

The engine sounds different, but I love the smoothness, whereas the C43 with the performance exhaust I may have used half the time, and while nice, it was something that I'm glad there was a button to disable.

Same. I have tried the S7, RS6, S4, Q7 and now the S5 Sportback. I have come to the conclusion that I am just not an Audi guy. Can't put my finger on it, because materials and drive are good, but from the moment I started steering and driving, i just feel turned off!
