I think you guys are confused. The 3 and 5 series MSRP spread has pretty much been the same and not much has changed with the G generation. You could always fully option a 3 series to be just as or more expensive as a 5 series. There is nothing new about this, and the OP is comparing a base M550 to a fully loaded M340i. If you really want to compare, a well optioned M550 is $95k and a stripper is $74k. It all comes down to personal preference and what the owner's need are for the vehicle.
It seems such an utterly useless speculation to ask if they are too close in price because you are not getting the same product for the same price.
