Anyone noticed higher temps with Pennzoil vs Castrol. I'm not sure if I'm just not recalling correctly but I feel like it sits higher in hot outside temps and sits colder in winter temps.

I vaguely recall cooler temps with Pennzoil but I wouldn't call it scientific by any means. I run both. Pennzoil has a better additive pack using a bit of Moly.

If I was running long oci, I'd use Motul Xcess since it has a similar formulation as Castrol but more additives PPM.

I have done so many used oil analyses and have looked at thousands more on bitog.com. Results:" oil is oil" . No difference between Wal-Mart supertech and Motul oil as far as results. Use a syn for extended drain intervals. I persolnally use QS Ultimate Durability. But then again I drive Subarus

More important is the filtere. Fram Ultra Synthetic Imho the best. Filters a t 20 microns vs most filters which are 30 to 40

Heads up: Since Castrol Edge 0w-40 is no longer LL-01 approved, Castrol's website is now recommending their Castrol Edge 5w-40 weight as being LL-01 approved.

See MSDS/product detail: https://msdspds.castrol.com/bpglis/F...582A4004AD6DA/$File/BPXE-AA5D4U.pdf

Looks like this one can be found at Walmart for $25. Sounds like I'll be running this version going forward since Pennzoil Platinum 5w-40 is hard to find here.

Castrol Edge Titanium 5W30 M (previously C3) in my E61 525d (Netherlands).

I've tried one time Shell Helix 5W30 but I noticed the engine wasn't as stable and quiet as with Castrol. Also the turbo was slightly more noticeable. So for me never something else besides Castrol.

Oil change every 25k-30k kms. I only drive long distances (highway).

After doing many UOA analysis and viewing thousands more on bitog.com. Oil is Oil little if any difference in wear metals.

I think though that QS Ultimate is one of the best. That's what I run. But also the filter is more important.

Fram Ultra Syntetic is the best. filters at 20 microns vs 30+ microns for others (including BMW). Will cut your wear in half.

In theory, would a 0w30 allow you to drive aggressively sooner than a 5w40?

i.e. generally people recommend ~180f oil before pushing it. How different is that for 5w40 vs 0w30 (obviously keeping all else constant)

A 0w30 would come to temperature quicker than a 5w40.

5w30 for N52
10w60 for S54

Prefer Castrol, but any high quality full synth will do.

Micron rating for the MANN HU-816 is 20 microns

That's not true. Thicker oil reaches temperature quicker than a thinner oil.

In real world not really. If you look at the viscosity charts you'll see that both trend extremely close once they reach 20C(68F).

Thanks, I was looking for something like that. Looks like the 5w-40 "needs" about 8c(~15f) more to match the viscosity of the 0w-30.

I have the M6 with the S63 engine. Was on the west coast with just dealer changes and top offs. Now am in PA with one dealership..and not a good one. Switched to Mobile 1 5W30 but didn’t trust the filter they used. Got a coupon from the dealer and they changed to OEM 5w30 but I bought some Redline Euro formula 5w30 to top and am seriously considering changing my own oil and using the Redline. I have been hearing about Motul, Rivera, Schaffers, Lucas, Amsoil and some others. No one is really discussing them, all premium expensive oils. Okay, so perhaps at that level they are all the same. It is winter here and temps get pretty low. I warm my girl up but I’m always wondering how best to treat her. So would love any advice of what viscosity I should really be using? FYI-she has 51k on her (2013) but BMW dropped a new engine in her 17k ago. So my decisions on maintenance have to bear that in mind. Would love to hear all your thoughts.

1st Oil Change, just under 1k miles, Moly Leichtlauf High Tech Engine Oil 5w40, Mann Filter.

Engine sounds smoother, was surprised at how dirty the oil was already. Is a nicely thicker oil. Sending it to Blackstone, just for the hell of it, benchmark at least.
