I agree with you wholeheartedly.

1) Would never want to be trying to daily a near 20 year old car.

2) There are so many advancements in the last 20 years in automotive technology, why would you NOT drive a new model car?

3) The Macan does not drive that well. It is good for what it is, but It does not drive as well as the X3M.... Go drive an X3M for an hour. Then hop into a RWD M340. There is no comparison.

And lots of hard plastics inside that Macan cockpit.

Also, driving an older bimmer and having to do the upkeep is not for everyone. My last E46 I put on 200K miles but the upkeep was a hassle. In 2016 when I parted ways I swore to never hang unto a car that long again.
I need 4 doors for my situation so my options are extremely limited. No sedan is going to meet all specs or be perfect. Like others have said it doesn't make any financial sense to buy a used e46 and e90- they just won't be reliable daily drivers at this point.

I know the GTI is FWD but it ticks off most of my needs and IMHO it's the closest i can get to having an e46 sedan. It's small, lightweight, nimble and agile. Solid chassis and handles reasonably well(did pull a .95g on the skidpad on michelin's) Steering has a quick ratio and it's pretty precise. That's basically all i care about.

Until then i will enjoy my G20. It' ticks off almost all of those boxes too but it's just gotten too big and heavy for me and steering isn't as quick and responsive as the GTI.

Agree, curious if you've tried the Genesis G70, its been a while since I drove it, but to me it felt lighter off its feet, more agile and had better steering than the current G20, probably not enough to make a difference for you but could still be an interesting choice, as long as you go with the 3.3 - the 2.0 isn't good at all - but they are better to finance than lease.

The only car in this class that feels like an old-school BMW is the Alfa Giulia, however, that's like playing a game of risk, although I have heard that the 2.0 is much more reliable than the QF, but still of course a risk, but could be a fun 2-year lease with all the deals they're throwing at the car.

Otherwise, the GTI is an excellent choice, although I personally would wait for the R, as if I am going to be on a FWD chassis I would prefer all wheels be driven to reduce torque steer and wheel spin/hop up front, as well as for winter, but nonetheless still a fun and practical daily.

One of my family members has the G70 3.3 and I'm not ashamed to admit that it has better steering than the G20. You're absolutely right though- despite it being decently heavy and 184.4 inches it does *feel* like more of a go cart experience than the G20. It is very impressive but like you said-lease is horrendous and it does fall short in some areas. For me though, it would be like trading a boat for a slightly better boat for more $.

Alfa is great on pap er but there's so many other variables involved where it just makes me think twice (low quality interior, mushy brakes, dealer network, reliability, etc.) And while the steering gets universal praise, i actually think it's *too* light.

I'm good til 2022 so hopefully the R will be out by then. I'll definitely drive both before making a decision. I think i'll finance and keep that car for 4-5 years. They hold their value pretty decently too.

Has anyone considered the new A45 AMG that's coming out, for those requiring a 4 door?

Reviews seem to speak highly of its potential.

I’m intrigued. I test drove the A220 with the AMG sport package (i know apples to oranges) and it was horrible. Car was so floaty and steering was light and vague. Higher lease than the 330i too.

They gave my wife an A250 for a day while her Merc was in for service.

The interior was impressive though I was bored with the dynamics.

However from what I understand the A45 uses a different DCT gearbox, differential which can send 100% to rear or front and even to just 1 rear wheel. Believe that's how they get it to drift. Obviously the engine is the show here.

Been daily driving RWD for past 20 years so unless the dynamics can match the engine etc; wouldn't make sense for me.

Dude, just log in in your profile page, on the top right you will see customize profile. Click that, go on the left column and pick “change your username”. It takes 2 minutes. I just changed mine.

I can't. Because I use to be a sponsor, I have to have an admin do it.

I'm glad they called out BMW on the oil consumption issue.

Bmw should never have dropped the 6mt in the 3 series. Makes me like my f30 n55 over the 340.

Without a manual trans it'll never blow it outta the water. It's very easy to wake up an ewg n55 to 500 hp.

This discussion is about stock, not roided out.

The stock M340i does indeed surpass the stock F30.

Inside is nice but there should be a vote which body looks better the f bod vs g bod and I'll bet the f gets way more votes.

I never liked the hood line in the F30 and F10.

I think the frame on the G20 and G30 is too thick, something about them being all black (on a non-black model) just looks a bit off in my opinion, I only notice on black grills though, chrome/cerium gray grills don't stick out as much.
