Thanks JNW1 for a great answer - appreciated.
It raises some of the issue I'm currently wrestling with. As you can probably tell from the original post I'm toying with getting a new car after 3 and a half years in the 340i. I've been driving 6 pot cars for a long time now and my heart tells me the M340i is the one to go with. Having always been a saloon driver I'm thinking I'd like to try a G21. My head though keeps telling me that a 330i would be actually what I need now that I've scratched the B58 itch and it does seem from what I've read that the 4 pot B48 engine is very good. Decisions, decisions. I actually wish there was a non-xdrive 6 pot petrol between those two models but you can't have everything I suppose. Still the decision making is half of the fun I guess. Any comments from anyone who has moved from a 6 to a 4 would be much appreciated.

Just in terms of G21 against the saloon, I don't think there's any significant difference in the way they drive so it really comes down to whether you value or want the extra practicality and versatility of the Touring. With a couple of dogs I do and, unless you don't like the look of an estate, personally I'd go Touring over saloon every time. |

I have a 330i Touring and I love it. In real-world driving I’ve never thought I need more power. Coming from diesel after diesel it takes me back to my 944S2. Love it.

Having scratched the b58 itch with my 440i gc, I was tempted to drop down to a more than capable 2.0 l lump this time, and even considered a tesla.
However, having a test drive in the m340i at the weekend convinced me otherwise. It's a new beast again. Smiling like a big kid for the 30-40 mins I had it out. One last time in the magnificent b58 3.0 it is to be. Signed up that morning.

I guess the answer is to try and get a 330i test drive but I don't think they're particularly common.

I’m going to need to change my tyres soon. Not a lot of choice if staying star marked. What’s the consensus? Just fit the correct size and be done with it?

Now I have no doubt you'd be happier with a 330i than I was with the volvo and going from a 6 pot petrol to 4 pot petrol is alot easier than a 4 pot derv, plus the g20 is a great car with any engine but..... Plus having the even with the more powerful b58 in the g20 with xdrive means you can use it any weather without batting an eyelid. |
