Replacement Windscreen

Anyone replaced their front windscreen yet.

500km and already damaged the windscreen.

No idea what has happened but was washing my car and when I got to the windows noticed a huge double scratch line right through the windscreen running in line with the wiper direction. I've only used the wipers once in a bit of a downpour.

Pretty annoying as it's deep and I can't see how it could of happened. Tried the old tooth paste trick but must be deeper than surface scratches.

My new C250d was about $800 change out which I thought was reasonable. It didn't have HUD but had the full camera setup.

Do you have windscreen cover with your insurance? Is it repairable? If it needs to be replaced, I would go get it replaced at a BMW dealership with an OEM windscreen because of all the complexity of driver assist cameras, reflection of HUD etc.

Yeah I have free windscreen replacement, unlimited I think. I wasn't sure if she insurance would cover scratches though?

They are pretty deep, running my fingernail across them you can feel the depth

Wouldn't be putting anything in but OEM at the dealers, the Merc was OEM, the dealership used O'Brien's and they recalibrated it back at the dealership.

I read in the UK someone paid $2,500 for an OEM windscreen. Merc was a third of the price

Sorry to hear mate ! I've noticed some scratches too but unsure if they're still there or not with all the Melbourne downpour.

Hope it's not a windscreen replacement ! Btw - what is the old toothpaste trick do ?

I had a windscreen company have a look at it and they showed me a whole heap of cuts in the glass that I never saw before ... not sure where they have come from as I've only done 600ish km and haven't been on any road trips.

Insurance is replacing it. Glass co said it's too deep for a repair.

I was told about light scratches that if they are surface and not deep , buffing the area with a toothpaste with baking soda takes them out rather well. Have done it before on previous cars but no luck this time around unfortunately

So is it being replaced by an aftermarket company or by the dealership? Are you getting an OEM windscreen through your insurance company?

I've got the tiniest of hairline scratches at my eye level thats visible with some light. A little annoying. Not the worst.

Maybe will try cerium oxide polish for gently. Will be a day project!

I am curious about your name. Is it deliberately "I am aware" backwards??

It is. I joined this forum in 2005, when was 18 and I thought it was clever at the time. Did not dream of having a 3 series way back then. Retrieved my password this year.

insurance should cover it, as it's impacting driver vision.
If you have HUD, insist on OEM...the screen is specially treated so I wouldn't trust anything other

Based on my googling it could be a bit of a fight with my insurer who will want aftermarket. I'll have to insist on OEM on the basis that of all the camera and sensor gear and HUD.

Anyways - an update.

Rang GIO. I have one free glass replacement each calendar year.

The glass replacement options in the phone menu send you direct to Obrien. I provided my details. The operator asked if I have a HUD. I said yes and insisted on OEM, trying to stress that it has heaps of cameras and sensors. She did say it would need to be recalibrated.

She got a little snippy and said that if they have third party they will just glue the sensors to the third party glass. I said it has to be OEM otherwise I cant do the claim. She said hold on while she checks stock.

She confirmed they do not have stock but that Obriens will call me within 24 hours to discuss. She told me that if they do not have a third party replacement then by default it will be OEM.

I suspect she wanted me to read between the lines and understand that she can't promise any type of glass but that the policy is that its third party if they can and OEM if there is no third party and that for your fancy complex car there is no third party option. I hope that's the case.

She gave me my claim number and that was it.

If they can't give me OEM then I'll have to withdraw the claim and go via BMW for the OEM part and just eat the cost.

Bit unlucky. Never had a cracked windscreen in 15 years of driving.

It'll be over $4000 if you go through BMW. I did my initial chip through O'Brien and at that time at least they said the replacement was OEM. 'Exactly the same without the BMW sticker'.
