Save Our Racecars By Supporting the RPM Act

Guys,

SEMA is asking for us the manufacturers, retailers, and customers to sign on this RPM ACT so it can get passed by the Congress.

This act clarifies that a road driven car can be turned into a race car, that's all we're fighting for here.

Help the Industry and keep our passion alive.

I didn't go through the detail.
But, I got email by SEMA and Vendors regarding this.

Similar as before on CA Exhaust law that was passed in January 2019.
Everyone in the industry getting together to repeal it.

Sent. Thanks for letting us know. Remember don't drive like jerks on civilian streets. Save the racing for the tracks and we all win.

How many people signing this actually own RACE cars, driven in legitimate sanctioned motorsport competition events? I bet not many.....

Probably less than 5% and it's why I won't sign the petition. IMO SEMA knows this which is why they're pushing for a new law. SEMA wants to effectively insulate tuners and sellers of non-emissions compliment exhaust systems from having to comply with the Clean Air Act.

There's no way these companies could stay in business if they only sold for vehicles which were converted into dedicated track cars.

Agreed. Seems like one out of three GT-R's I come across is decatted, and none of them probably see anything more than a track day at COTA.

screw SEMA.

This isnt about protecting club racers it's an attempt to keep flouting federal emissions laws so you can sell illegal catless exhausts which you, and the rest of us, all know will be used on the street.

These cars already have 500+ hp do you really need to cause more pollution just to hit 525hp?!? When does it pass into absurdity?

I am a car enthusiast, I am a racing enthusiast but this is just a sham attempt at legislation to insulate tuners who knowingly violate federal emissions laws with almost every single exhaust sale. They will hide behind their phony "off road waiver" but we all know what's really going on.

Edit: how about you guys go to SEMA and tell them to clean up their act and actually regulate aftermarket exhaust/tune sales so their in compliance with emissions laws rather than trying to be the NRA for the tuner industry

Meh, if it means less annoying mufflers on riced-out civics and racer-wanna-be cars, then I certainly hope this act won't pass.

I live in the city where I'm woken up by one of these every night. Most of the parts in question are exhaust modifications, which are disproportionately loud. It's time to silence the "because race car" crowd.

And who are we kidding, really? - We all know that virtually no street cars are being converted into race cars. Instead, 99.99% of so-called "race car" parts end up being installed and driven on street cars. To make matters worse, most of these modifications are distasteful and yes, I am the authority on what "tastefully modded" is.

If it will help curb those rolling coal inbreds then bring it on.

This is why the sport cat option is so damn expensive, because why not just go catless for way cheaper? with this law in effect the sport cat / performance cat option will become cheaper with higher demand for that extra 15hp and enhanced sound.

Counter argument is how much air and sound pollution could be saved by tuners running catalytic converters? My guess is in the grand scheme if things, not much, instead maybe help make high flow performance cats cheaper and more people would use them. Also focus the environmental attention on where the best ROI is like replacing old school dirty coal energy plants in developing nations by sending our service members there to guide them, creating jobs paid for by other countries bringing money back into the USA. Since America is so far ahead in terms of technology we can help others.

I think the green new deal, should it ever be passed, should allow for companies to bypass domestic carbon footprint reduction requirements if they can prove a greater international carbon footprint reduction. Low hanging fruit and opportunities to clean up that we did years ago would be easier and cheaper for the company to execute.

The law also bans any and all tuning of anything that could impact emissions. This translates into no tuning other than factory.

Backstory: the EPA in 2016 sought to "clarify" their interpretation of current regulations in such a way as to put street cars converted to race cars -- with emissions equipment removed -- in their crosshairs. The language got removed but SEMA still decided to push for a law specifically protecting motor sport. Right now EPA chooses not to enforce the regulations on vehicles converted for race use and used only that way. The proposed law would prohibit the EPA from changing their minds about that.

Like others here I see no reason to pollute the air by removing emissions equipment on street cars. But I am an enthusiast and I do enjoy seeing racing of all kinds including racing cars based on street cars. I'm supporting the bills for that reason.

I'd be on board with this bill IF vendors, with the conclusion of the sale, were required to report to State DMV that the vehicle had been converted to "off road' use.

Cars on the track should absolutely have cats and emissions equipment installed. I love tuning cars but as a kid who formally had asthma living in so cal, I also love breathing. It sounds crazy, but you can race a car and have a catalytic converter at the same time.

This question in-tells the problem. It is what 'they' define as a racecar. Possibly, not the actual definition of a proper racecar. As well as the fact, that your question shouldn't really matter. We should have the ability to sit in our garage, gut a car, do whatever work we're going to do and set it up for track use. Period.
