Nice. One suggestion is to Keep the M3, use it as a project for a weekend track toy. Unless you require to sell it for other reasons. I regretted selling my E90 M- Sport, was not a real M, but made me sad to see it go. Unfortunately it was manual but the rest of the underpinnings were from the M3. LSD etc...

Anyhow, keep the car you're likely less to regret it.

My E92 M3 was my favorite car I've ever owned... got it new and should never have sold it. Either way, your SS M3 looks perfect! Wish I could take it off your hands

The new cars are quite capable but they don't feel as special.. objectively great cars, just without the special feeling of the older cars. Tanzanite is a great color, though! I had it on my F80 and loved it.

I agree that E92 exterior design is timeless.
One of the best BMW design ever.

Not about power. It's about how cars feel. The E9X is connected in a way a new BMW cannot be, IMO.

People should go back to keeping the cars they love; instead of searching for 'newness'.
I always get a kick out of these comments. I mean, I get it. But progress is progress and my F80 left me remembering fondly but never missing my E90 and my guess is whatever I get next will leave me feeling the same about my F80 (which I've LOVED). I love my cars but these aren't exactly air-cooled Porsches or something that has a true nostalgic/historic joy to it.
There are plenty of BMWs that are as desirable even more so than an air-cooled Porsche. You can't raise a family easily in an Air cooled Porsche but you definitely can in a more analog M car and you can go to the store and buy a bunch of stuff and throw it in the trunk.

For many an M3 is the ideal family car. Pretty sure a V8 M3 will carry historic/nostalgic value just need to give it a few years.

I always get a kick out of comments that think "latest is greatest"

I agree.... Although it is impossible to know what the future holds, I wouldn't get rid of the E92. It is going to skyrocket in value in a few years time.

Last truly analog M3, With a V8? car collectors will be clamoring for it. Especially after the Grill Monster comes out (G80)

I had a 235, EDed it. Loved it! Got the F80 and absolutely love it, but, it is missing "something" hard to put my finger on it. Sadly I feel the F80 is going to drift away and be easily forgotten. The E92 will be just as legendary as the E46

Congrats on the new car Transfer! I had a G20 330i as a daily for about 6 months (company car) and enjoyed it! Fuel economy was out of this world and the interior was such a huge jump from the F30. The tech was also pretty awesome.

I'm so fortunate that my commute to work has really smooth roads, and I do get to open the V8 up when I'm getting on the highway. Of course, living 1 hr away from the Blue Ridge Parkway also helps. Nowadays, my M's get driven about once a week each, and the rest of the time, I'm in my Toyota Tundra. I completely understand the ease and comfort of a nice plush vehicle with good ride quality.

Enjoy in good health!

Great write up. I never owned an E92 M3 (my first BMW was a E92 335) but i was always fond of the M3. By the time i was ready for my own M3 the F80 was out. Had one for 3 years and loved it. I still get excited when i see the old E92 M3's around town. Saw an E90 black M3 in Santa Barbara this past week that was a beauty.

The M340 is very capable, I enjoy sport plus mode and the exhaust. Its not quite as tight and sharp compared to the FF80 but the power is a decent replacement. I'm not a huge tech guy, but the apple car play (when it works), active cruise and drivers assistance are neat on long trips.

I doesn't give me that big swell of satisfaction when i look at it, but i def do think its a beautiful car.

Since the M3 is DCT, its less likely to hold value. Check out the latest episode of Wheeler Dealer. Ant converts a DCT M3 to traditional manual!
Its a fun surgery to watch

I drive my wife's m40i x3 and b58 is a great engine with way more torque than m3. Problem with torque is you eventually get used to it. I can never get tired of s65.

My bet is he'll be back

Great write up, given how big 3 series is these days always made me wonder if I should have waited a year and get G20 M340i xDrive instead of my G30 540i xDrive

So I have owned two E series M3's and two F series M3's, my last and current daily being a 2017 competition package car with the 6 speed manual.

The E90 M car sounded great but honestly was severely lacking in torque. You had to flog the car to have fun.

The F series was a vastly superior car in every way. Smoother, wickedly fast, more balanced, sharper handling. This was especially so when they came out with the competition pack car which wasn't faster but was more refined in every way. My 2017 M is a hoot.

I'm looking forward to moving to a calmer, quieter, less hyper M340. Slightly bigger and more comfortable.... I've had a half dozen 5 series and that car has grown too big.

I don't see the E series M cars going up in value. They simply made too many of them.

I also own a bone stock '95 993. It is definitely, without a doubt, the best car I have ever owned. You have to spend time in one to understand. Absolutely sublime to drive.

Can I order my M340 without that silly looking grill? Good God!

The E92 M3 has a beautiful and clean design and still looks great today. I'm afraid I cannot say that about the G20 and that hideous grill!. However I've been told that it is a great car to drive 😀Enjoy

The E series M cars do look beautiful. With the BBS type wheels they look especially BMW

The grill on the new car is hideous. Hard to believe multiple people sat around a big table and agreed that looked good. I hear it is a very nice driver.

To me the best attribute of the M cars, any year, has been the unflappable suspension. Just a joy to drive. The engine and speed is fun at times, but you really can not drive it to its potential on the street. It turns into an exercise in patience.

My current M has a LOT of squeaks, buzzes and rattles. Annoying in a car that costs 80k.

Absolutely correct.

I have a Boosted 2.4L that would leave that NA V8 in its dust.

Have you driven a Supercharged E92 M3??

Honestly I think this is the ticket right here. I do wish the S65 made its way into other smaller and lighter BMW's but it is what it is. The engine is a gem but the E9x is a bit of a boat in comparison to say the E46, modern M2 or a 997. It'd be a keeper for me only as long as I needed it to haul more than 2 people regularly. There's a 1M/135i conversion that was done, no?

An interesting read and you must do what works in your circumstances.
I jumped into an E92 last year as newer BMW's have lost the plot.
Gone are the large displacement NA motors and round halos. I like my gauges analog and round, also. The newer digital clusters are a hot mess especially the tachometer which runs counter clock wise. Who was the genius who thought that was a good idea?
The stereo in the E92 and overall electronics are quite acceptable. The driving experience is completely immersive, between the induction and exhaust notes, and anyone looking for more than that loses the point of the car, IMO.

Enjoy your new ride. My E92 is a keeper and not for sale.

I guess, but power delivery is also a factor.

Dont get me wrong I love the new cars, and the turbo's are nice, my 750 is just a train it pulls forever.

That being said when I drive aggressively I still cant get into the turbo's and the lag, even if BMW has done a great job in reducing it, its still there.

I have not driven the new M340 but I am sure its a fantastic car, and 9 out of 10 times its the perfect car, right power, right confort etc, but man there is nothing like the directness of the NA V8 and I6's.

I think that is why I am looking forward to electric so much, back to more direct power.

I was at the M track days a few weeks back and I drove the M2 in the autocross the MX3 in the drag race and the F80 M3 on the track.

The lag drove me crazy, especially the MX3, the M2 had several moments of stutter as well. I actually dont think those cars are set up very well for short courses, I didnt feel it as bad in the F80 due to the maintained speeds.

Still think they are amazing cars, but I havent sold my M3 because I still get smiles from that exhaust note and reving it out. It justs just so connected.

The only you bought looks amazing, good luck with it, but find a way to keep the M

Quality throughout is very high for this price point. I also found that I actually like the cerium gray trim and badging, especially on this color although the downside is that it waterspots at the drop of a hat. I will not be paying out for black trim pieces. It should be noted though that this is a large car and the 3 series is no longer a small thing. I find it more difficult to park due to size but don't notice this much while driving at speed. The upside here is that interior space is excellent including rear seats that comfortably fit adults with plenty of room.

How is the Oyster holding up so far? Has it been treated? Also, do you like the oyster-colored lower dash?

Unfortunately jeans dye transfer has been worse than I expected and slightly difficult to clean up. It's a nice interior to be sure but I don't think I would do it again. I don't mind the lower dash section being beige.
