Car insurance crazy prices

Spent more time this year ringing around for car insurance than ever before and still no joy

BMW M340i 2020 worth £37K. 51 years old, 25+ no claims bonus, 10K miles a year and social use only

Last year with Admiral £390, this year £980. When asked why I was told cost of living, so told them to do one

A Plan - £1K
Carol Nash £1100
Adrianflux -£1K
BMW - £800 but that's without mods, I have M Performance kit fitted and when I told them they wouldn't quote

Spoke to a few others and told last year insurance companies got hammered. Lost money due to lack of parts, putting people in hire cars, EV cars getting written off due to cost of batteries.

The worse hit is German cars and the reason they have hit me hard is because they don't want you.

Also told it was the price of car, which I laughed because it was £60K new and now only worth £36K which is less so how has the price gone up.

If you put a M340i into go compare you get over 126 quotes, add the modded sides, front and boot spoiler and its 26 quotes and over £900. Some even £4K

Spoke to a mate of mine who has a M4, last year it was £750 with admiral and this year its £3K

It's a total rip off because they can charge what they like, you need insurance and it's not regulated correctly.

NIGHTMARE

That's pretty much the same as me although I'm a little Older !! Everybody wanted near £1K. Ended up getting Admiral down to £770 by adding the house insurance and getting a multi deal although Aviva did come to £800. (2021 M340D with mods).

Timely post this.
I was with AA insurance, last year was £488, renewal came through at the weekend at £880 and they had also pumped the total xs up to £800. Wowsers.
M340i, 2021, 11 years no claims, 49 years old, 15k miles ..
Told that a number of higher performance cars were being stolen to order..
Looked on money supermarket, best was around £550 but had never heard of them. Tesco was around £580, all with £500 total xs (tried a variety of xs).

I then tried bmw direct flex insurance, came in at £53/month, £250 total xs. It's a rolling monthly payment, can cancel anytime, payment level set for one year. Level of cover looks really decent actually so went with them today. I know you have to put your details in yet another Web site, but worth a try I'd suggest to all you M340i owners.

I listed BMW it was £800 without mods. But I have M performance kit and they don't quote for cars with mods

I was quoted similar until I told them I had a front and rear spoiler and rear diffuser. That's when it went tits up even though I also have a BMW tracker fitted which actually made no difference to any quote I received but that's for another thread.

Garage List
2020 M340i  [0.00]
ahh the insurance conversation love it!

36 years old with M340i, 2 years NCB, 3 claims (not my fault), 6k miles, pleasure and commuting and Admiral total is £1,800

Although in August renew i do expect it to go down, older and wiser, 3 years NCB and one claim will expire

I noticed a lot of insurance companies do not like the two words: BMW and Mods, think i may not declare this time lowered suspension mod and tick no mods!

Agreed, prices are insane. Just renewed mine - massive renewal price originally. Finally went with Admiral and saved a lot by going ‘multicar’ with my wife - worth checking out. Saved us £240 in total.

After a bit of confusion which was all my fault (note to self - wait for renewal invite to come through) I renewed with Aviva last week at £592 up from £498 so nearly 19% up. Judging by what some people are saying on here I seem to have got off quite lightly.

If it helps anyone and your car is unmodded, then BMW Flex was by far the next best quote I got and the cover is very good including foreign travel and courtesy car if those are the sort of options you normally go for.

£875 for my M550 (100% stock)
Obviously location and driver are big variables

Was expecting far worse so not too bad and about £300 more than my previous 540 last year

Does changing the cover start date change it much? Last time I checked getting cover immediately was more expensive than say in one month. Not £100s of pounds though,
It worth getting it organised early perhaps.

Still waiting for my car to be delivered, but comparison site quotes have gone from £350 to £400 since March.

Common wisdom is that you shouldn't leave renewing too late e.g. https://www.moneysupermarket.com/car...when-to-renew/

Are these per month quotes?

Prices are all over the place here in the US. But I pay $380 per month for pretty standard coverage with Progressive.

Thanks - makes a lot of sense. Need to get the timing right before the car is delivered.

This had me worried for my M340i order and how much more it will be over what I paid last year for the 330D. I just went to get a quote with my current provider lv.com but it's insisting it must have a tracker.

Adding a tracker is £1,572.47 with a £850 excess vs the £451.80 I paid this year for the 330D with £400 excess

It looks like even my renewal for the 330d will more than double to £1,176.04

Still working on this and had some massive arguments with insurance companies today

The best one is BMW Flex insurance they will NOT insure a BMW M340I with BMW M performance body kit fitted

They a list of modifications as an example which doesn't need declaring, the M Performance kit like a carbon boot spoiler and sides is not on that list, so you NEED to decalre

Once you do that all quotes will be gone. I called them and they said was it fitted at Factory which I explained it wasn't, but at the dealership. I supplied BMW part numbers, invoices and they still said NO sorry sir

So BMW themselves will not insure their own M cars with any sort of mods

I did a few more quotes for 330D and 335D on a F series car worth around £20K and the insurance groups is 39 plus and pretty much same price. They have all doubled and were all screwed !!!!!

Was going to post this very topic today, and someone has beaten me to it. M340i with no mods. 6000 miles per year.

56, 9+ years NCB, 3 year restricted medical licence, clean licence. Last year was £390, renewal just came through at £590. 50% increase.

Spoke to the insurance company but of course it's 'cost of living'. Seems the insurance companies are taking the opportunity to cash in.

Eventually got £540 with the RAC (I'm not a member) and a further £45 from Quidco. Compared to others here I feel I shouldn't complain!
