I have fond memories of driving my Golf R on twisty back roads. I loved the feeling of slingshotting out of tight corners and feeling the push as soon as you dip into the throttle. The g80 is close, but hitting that sweet spot is sometimes harder. G80 is an absolute rocketship though. I really notice the difference on an on ramp. Golf R didn’t have much pull once at highway speeds. G80 feels like barely begun stretching it’s legs before I have to let off because going too fast.

I find the Pobst comment unusual. Why not just shift the auto w/ paddles in Manual/drive logic three???

He tried. The car wouldn't allow him to shift at certain points. It's a torque converter auto not a DCT so you don't truly have 100% control over the shift points.

I guess it’s 70ish pound ft difference between base vs. comp showing its presence here because everyone says the comp and especially xdrive versions go like a rocket.
The S58s design intentionally trades low-end torque for top-end power. This is the exact opposite of the B58, which with an 11.0:1 compression ratio and relatively low boost feels nice and stout at light throttle.

For the S58, they dropped the compression ratio way down to 9.3:1, which means as an "NA engine" it makes very little power. But that low CR also means you can pile on an incredible amount of boost. ~19psi in the base and ~25psi in the comp layers a ton of power on, especially at higher revs. But you have to ask for it. Unlike the B58, it's not "just there" right off idle.

So how do you make it feel quicker? You've got three pedals, one of them is a lot larger than the others and is attached to the floor. That should help. If you need more than that, definitely look at a tune.

Flash the DME, end of story. Anyone purchasing a base model to save money and get the same engine at a lesser cost I would think has the intention to flash the DME. If you’re auto, also do the CSL flash/coding to the rest of it and you won’t be complaining any more.
