Let me just take my family and kids out in my M3. It's got loads and loads of room and practicality for a family and all their belongings.

Oh... No. It doesn't.

Let's go with a 340 tourer that is rather quick but vastly more practical for a family

Are you suggesting that an M3 has less room than a 330 / 340? If so, please explain...

Umm, you do understand that the whole point of the M3 / 4 is to provide elite performance within the framework of a standard 3 series shell right? Space is nearly identical between the two...

That said, M3 hands down.

So you're telling me the tourer 3 and an M3 are almost identical. Sorry but no.

If you refer to my original comment I mentioned a tourer. You just skipped over it.

Also the choice of a brand new fully loaded next gen car Vs an outdated M3 just doesn't appeal. The M340 will be quicker for lots of things due to the xdrive.

I'd gladly have the next gen tourer when it comes out.

Wagons are a tough sell here in the USA. People just haven't bought in to the looks of them and gravitate towards SUVs instead. I'm one of them as well. Although something like an E63 wagon is a mean wagon but I still wouldn't own one.

One thing for sure in favor of the M3 is the looks. As much as I like my M3, if it was in the shell of a regular 3 series, I don't think I'd care for it as much. I think once the G80 is out, people will feel the same way between the M version and the regular 3 series.

People who go M3 that are "not posing" would never buy an M340.

People who buy M340 will put comfort very high over performance.

I have very specific expectations for any car I purchase.

My gti is going to excel as its current role; daily driver.

The M3 is about its business.

When your abusing that M340 the M3 is effortlessly going about the task.

The touring may be practical but it's a freaking station wagon. I am not on the SAV/SUV bandwagon (my wife is) but they look better than the touring cars.

I want the M340i for the B58 engine but with more comfort than the M3. Unfortunately I would be a poser in an M3. The M340i should be a great combination of performance and comfort.

For daily M340 all day for best of both worlds.

When I can afford it; my next car will be Lexus ES 350 and keep the M3

Is there any data for the 25% take rate worldwide?

Not that I’ve ever seen. He mentioned that the figure might apply to “high performance” models (aka ///M cars). I imagine that’s much more likely.

I am just curious how the rest of the world sees I4/I6 turbo mated to ZF 8AT, and if many in those markets will pay the premium (usually $1500 in local currencies) to pick ZF 8AT.

A lot of people say the 3 series is more comfortable than the M variant yet they have the same passenger volume. I also find the M seats much more comfortable than the 3 seats. Additionally most enthusiasts get aftermarket suspension which eliminates the soft ride and negates it's advantages while still being heavier than the M counterpart and thus not handling as well. The 3 series does have adaptive cruise, which is a huge plus imho, and sound proofing so there are definite trade-offs. I'm wondering how many people actually option adaptive cruise, leave the suspension stock, and find sound proofing a deal breaker for the M.

I've owned several M3s as well as a few standard 3 series, and driven them all pretty hard and in different situations. Under no circumstances have I ever said, "wow, this 330 is actually better than the M3."

So let's be honest with ourselves here and call a spade a spade - you're either not buying the M3/4 because you don't want to spend the extra money (which is perfectly fine) or perhaps in this case, you just want the newest thing in the M340 (again perfectly fine).

It's just embarrassing and borderline insulting when people need to justify their purchase by stating that it is better than a car whose soul purpose is to supersede their model. So just drive what you have and enjoy it for what it is.

ZF 8speed Auto is ~2.000 €uro option in Europe. Despite the price, I would say that more than two thirds of F30s in Europe are equipped with ZF AT.
