Another runflat blow out!

10pm last night, hit a mound/lump of salt from the gritter on the M6 and blew out rear tyre - still 200 miles from home (F1 Eagle RF with less than 2k miles on it)

I had taken out the Road Hero spare I bought after the last blow out, the end result - night in a hotel, couple of hours driving round tyre fitters first thing this morning, and having to get recovered by BMW Assistance. They sorted me a hire car and will deliver my car to me next week, but the hassle from a simple tyre puncture is unbelievable. Not a single garage had any tyres in that size or slots to fit one on a Saturday.

Moral of the story - if you're driving more than 50 miles from home make sure you've got a spare, and if you've got one, put it in the car!

I’ve heard of two people recently who had double blow-outs. In one case caused by a pot-hole (invisible in the wet), and in the other case a sunken drain cover, but in both instances it took out both the front AND rear tyre on the same side.

Perhaps, given the poor state of the roads (especially round here) we should carry TWO spares!

I have the Goodyear F1 RF's on my car, and I have to say I find the low speed front end grip on them to be piss poor in the wet. Seriously considering going to PS4S's and buying a spare space saver to keep in my garage, as I rarely travel more than 10 whole miles these days. Even if my tyres still have aroud 5mm of tread left on them.

I’m tempted to ditch the run-flats myself, but the at two instant blowouts have been at high speed with no loss of control and I’ve been able to safely drive off the motorway

Have to say I've been hugely unimpressed with the Eagles on my car. I'm currently on 18k miles and I've had 3 new tyres so far, only one due to what I would consider a proper puncture - the others down to relatively low impact damage.

Totally agree the roads are crap at the moment, but prior to this car I hadn't put a new tyre on for over 10 years.

I done 175k in my 335d over 7 years and other than normal wear, I had to change 1 tyre due to a leaking valve.

I’m hoping once the lighter evenings come I can see the lumps and bumps and avoid them!

Those Eagles don't sound fit for purpose if you can blow one out hitting a pile of salt...

I shouldn’t say this - tempting fate - but my eagles have survived loads of big pot holes. Real car shakers. It’s impossible to miss them round here, especially in the wet when they become invisible.

Eagle F1's are the best for ride comfort by a long way but the robustness of their sidewalls is shockingly poor.
In the past I've had them fitted to an F32 435i and 'lost' two at less than 2k miles on them due to potholes. They were the earlier version of the F1's and I've always hoped that Goodyear would have addressed the issue since 2013. Clearly they haven't, judging what a lot of posters on the forum have been experiencing, which is very disappointing.
I've also had BMW coupes running on Bridgestone Potenzas and they seem to shrug off anything short of a sinkhole but the downside is they are harsh riding and also quite noisy.
My last G22 had Turanzas on which to be frank don't really warrant any comment!
My current car has P Zeros and I have to say they seem to be the best compromise of them all. Noise levels aren't intrusive, wear rate seems to be very, very good and most importantly the robustness of the sidewalls in being able to cope with potholes is excellent. I've clouted a couple of big b*st*rd potholes recently and inspection of the tyres shows they haven't shown any signs of damage.
I'm currently on about 5 to 5.5mm all round and evenly over the tread width with almost 15k miles.

Doesn't make any sense does it? Some guys have major problems with potholes and yet others, like yourself, haven't experienced the same issues?

Moral of the story is don't buy a car that doesn't come with a spare. Got caught out last week with the Mrs in her Scooby, which annoyingly, if you take out all the gubbins has room for a full size spare but of course they don't give you one.

G20/21 a bit different as you can't fit one. I ditched the RFTs and do carry a space saver in the boot.
