Really? Object detection with the camera+sensors should take priority over lane keeping.

My car doesn't have object detection in that sense. I'll give you an example of what can happen. I was driving in the smart lane/hard shoulder on the M4 and when I got to the part where there is a line that indicates where you have to move over if the lane is closed and the car suddenly veered to the right to follow the line when there was a HGV in the next lane.

On other occasions it can be confused by some road markings (especially goring against keep left arrows in the center line) and this can cause the car to steer too much to the left.

It's a dangerous system IMO but I do still use if occasionally on longer motorway trips.

Do you have DAP? If so it might be worth getting the radar sensors checked because no way should it try to steer you into the path of a lorry!

I've got the ultrasonic parking sensors which definitely work OK. I don't have the 360 degree cameras though.

Cars with DAP have side radar sensors buried in the front and rear bumpers in addition to the ultrasonic parking sensors. They do the blind spot warnings and assist with the limited self-driving.

Yes, definitely no blind spot warning in my car.

Yes they lock initially and then on and off as the Abs works. So not a full on lock but equally not something I want to be doing on a high speed corner for no reason.

I don’t understand how you’ve got the auto-steering thing then (you said you use it on motorways). Most odd.

Auto steering is part of DAP, which includes the radar sensors on the corners, blind spot warning, etc.

I think he means the steering intervention - you get the lane-assist even without full DAP.

Ah, the M4 post above read like the car has auto-steering. My apologies.

Well it has - even without the DAP, it will "correctively steer" to try and stop you from wandering out of lane.

So what's the difference between standard driver assistant features and the 'full fat' package then?

Maybe the full fat package doesn't try to kill you

There’s an overview of the different levels of assistance systems here.

An interesting read..thank you for that. Whilst it is clearly directed towards markets other than the UK it does give some good descriptions of the various systems BMW offer albeit differently named in some instances for the UK market.

I didn't spec the DAP package on my car from build because I wasn't interested in the features, the automatic cruise control being one of them. Nor do I have the 'surround view' set-up either, I consider myself still quite capable for the moment to manoeuvre and park my car safely without hitting 'owt!

The standard features like pedestrian and vehicle warning I'm all for and like others see the benefits with very minimal drawbacks. Lane guidance is helpful as long as the steering wheel vibration alert is set to minimum for me but steering intervention is definitely NOT helpful, again for me.

I think the main point should always be they are only there, however many systems you decide to have and/or activate to 'assist' (the clue being in the name!) and never to 'replace' all the things the driver ought to be doing.
