Questions about Carply and Carkey for 2020 m340i
Hi Folks! New to the forums and in the hunt for a 2020 m340i next month.
Is there anything that would prevent a 2020 model year m340i from being able to update to the latest version of idrive? I'm mostly interested in a car with the head up display and it would be nice to have the turn by turn directions displayed there and the dash with apple maps and carplay. As for apple carkey, is that something that is limited to only 2021 models and newer or can this be added with an idrive upgrade? Thanks! |

Can’t help you with the 2020, but my 2021 has both features. I also have a digital key card (looks like a fat credit card) that can be used to start the car. I think it’s supposed to be moisture resistant, but maybe not totally waterproof.

You can update to the latest version of idrive 7. Idrive 7 allows you to have turn by turn navigation for Apple Maps on CarPlay show up on the HUD, but the map itself will not show up on the HUD nor the dash. The digital key looks to be a feature introduced in 2021 and newer 3 series. |

My M340i is a 2020 model so doesn't have the Apple CarKey but does have the Digital Key (credit card thing!). To be honest, it's not really something I miss as with Comfort Access you can always set it to open / lock as you walk towards or away from the car.
Apple Maps does display turn info in the HUD but it's no where near as rich as what you get from BMW Nav. The upgrades to BMW Nav over the last couple of years have meant I tend to use that and not bother with Waze, Apple or Google Maps. However, what I do have is defaulting to Google Maps on the CarPlay home screen so I get the satellite view similar to this: View post on imgur.com |

Cars made after July or August of 2020 have Apple Carkey. The ones before have the card, but no phone key option. If you have iPhone then Apple Maps is displayed on HUD, if you have Android phone then Google maps is displayed on HUD.
