A huge mess trying to tune my M340i
Hi all, I purchased a stage 2 tune for my m340 which was supposed to be a easy flash process. Basically plug in the cord from the laptop to the car and flash it. Things went the other route that night. Basically my car had the newest update on the ecu so I had to send in the ecu to the tuner and can’t just flash it myself. I didn’t know so anyways when I tried to flash it, the car basically crashed and I had a bunch of warning lights. Car will not start, turn on, can’t put in neutral, nothing! Took out the ecu sent to the tuner to recover and flash for me. So yes, I am left without my car for a few days until I receive the ecu back. To make things worst, I travelled 10 miles away from home to go to this nice spot to do drive-by clips and hear the pops! The car is also parked on a street cleaning side so I had to come back 8am and sit in the car for 2 hours just so I don’t get a ticket. Can’t really be mad at this point because it happens. I purchased the overnight shipping to not feel any remorse. Haha.

I think a lot of the newer BMWs (and not just M cars with the S series engine) have the updated software preventing flashing and tuning without removing the ECU.
Something similar happened to my car when I tried flashing my 330i and it ended up being temporarily bricked and unusable for 3 days before I got help. Scared the crap out of me and made me return my tune. Luckily for me, my car was in my garage when that happened. Hope you get your ECU back ASAP and your car in your garage soon.

I've been seriously considering a tune and when I hear these stories it makes me second guess things... Thank you for posting & sharing your story.
Curious, what stage 2 brand did you purchase? |

OP
Sorry for the down time – but I’m sure you’ll be up and running soon enough (sounds like today!!) can't wait for your feedback. That said, I’m curious, did the application give you a warning prior to moving forward with the flash? The reason I ask is at a recent BMW meet I got into a conversation with someone else who was going to do the same thing – they were going to “try” to flash their M340 (that had the latest rev of software) with Mission to see if it would work despite being told their ECU needed to be sent it. They shared with me they started up the process but stopped due to a warning that appeared. They subsequently mailed their ECU in for the initial unlock and all is good (car was a beast as most stage 2 cars I've been in are) Also in that conversation he stated Alex shared with him that while presently you can get a warning to not flash, click OK and acknowledge the warning, you can still hit that flash button and mess things up for yourself - he told me this is being changed and it will soon simply not allow you to flash if it doesn't like what it sees (just sharing what was shared with me). Just curious either way if you got the warning – all good. If not sounds like Alex needs to look into this? ps- not calling you out if you did get the warning and clicked through - was just curious - God knows we all get anxious and make mistakes or misinterpret instructions (I have too many times to count) Take care....Happy Modding Sorry again this happened :-( **Edit update** Okay duh/stupid on my part - I just looked at the picture OP shared on a larger screen and yes I see the warning clear as day now - okay answered my own question. Guess we now know what happens if you move forward (sorry but thank you for taking one for the team) Last edited by chenry; 01-15-2020 at 11:51 AM.. Reason: looked at picture |

—THE UPDATE—
Hi all and thank you again for replies! It seems you are all curious as to what happened so let me share the update! Mission performance told me there was 2 options so let me copy and paste the exact messages. I’m recovering the ECU now. Based on severity of the crash, we have two options: 1) I can recover it and fowngrade it to older version so you can install it and flash tune it with your laptop. This way it will go out to you in 2 hours or so 2) I can do the step 1, then bench flash to the latest version while unlocking and tuning it to your flash option you paid for. This way requires me to setup a different bench and because of that it won’t go out till tomorrow. Obviously option 2 sounds better. The ECU would be recovered, latest update, and tuned so it’s just a plug and play. But I needed the car back ASAP and didn’t want to lose my overnight shipping that I paid for. So I went with option 1. I got my ECU back and plugged in the wires(I took a pic of the wires placements before taking it out). I got in the car and started it up. NOPE. Wouldn’t start. Contacted the tuner, he said he thinks my ECU went into energy saving mode and that is why it wouldn’t start. So i had to go into the laptop and do what mission performance told me to do. DURING THIS PROCESS, the battery freaking died! Had to get a friend drive to autozone and buy jumper cables. Left the car running for 20 mins to get enough juice so I can do the flashing process. At the end, I was able to flash the car! It was a nightmare! Alex at mission performance was there throughout the whole process messaging me and answering my annoying questions but he didn’t complain and has excellent customer service! If you’re thinking about getting the tune, do it! Just make sure u message the tuner about ur version to save yourself a headache. —about the tune—- The car pops and cracks so much it sounds like gun shots! I have many videos and took on a rs3 and jb4 m340. No more check engine light too! Instagram is @orange_m340i |

Congratulations on your stage 2 car! Since there’s no more CEL, does remote start work now?

I am assuming you asked for the burble tune? And man combined with your catless downpipe....Yeah I'm sure it does sound like you described - safe to say you won't be sneaking up on anyone :-) That white M340 that Alex tuned a little while back and added burble to was pretty aggressive (to my ear) and it had stock exhaust! |
