M340i knock in front suspension / steering rack on expansion joints 45mph or under

Anyone else experiencing this? Never have noticed it before, knock/rattle and can feel in steering wheel (about the only steering feel this car has).

I saw the tie rod recall thread wonder if related. Cars never touched a pothole or other obstacle.

Do you have adaptive suspension? Saw others mention similar issues. From what I read, most recent update seemed to address and rectify

I noticed this too. Front left at slow speeds. My car was made in Feb 20 so not part of the recall.

I'm on H&R springs and thought maybe they were moving / binding?

Is everyone who's having issues also have adaptive M suspension? I saw several guys who said the newest software update fixed this same issue for them on another thread.

Worth a shot

Mine has adaptive but also newest software afaik, 3/2020.

Didn't notice it prior to the software update which was installed back in March when the rear diff was replaced. Currently at 7500mi, took a long trip this weekend and also noticed vibration only in the steering wheel most noticably around 65mph.

Something's wrong up there

No knock for me (Msport 330 with passive suspension) but I also noticed a vibration through the steering wheel around 66-70mph. Feels like the steering vibration is set to medium/high. Once I'm below or above these speeds, vibration disappears. Passengers don't complain of any vibration through the chassis though.

Yes I only feel it in the wheel, not in floorboard or seats

Yes. I've noticed this at slower speeds and on certain roads- been going on for as long as I can remember. It's a "thump/knock" which you can both hear and feel. Don't like it, doesn't sound or feel right. If anyone knows what it is or how I can repair it please share your experience.

Get a reputable tyre shop to balance your wheels. Might not be your issue, but worth ruling it out.

Vibration at certain speeds is often the result of poorly balanced wheels/tyres.

If you have the same as this thread, then it's your steering gear. I had this on my F30 and was common in that platform, bmw actually released a fix for this on F30 platform. I have a mild one on my M2 also.

Thankfully my G20 is rock solid, but normally comes out on lowered cars.

Possible Fix for Front Suspension Noise

On my 2020 M340 with adaptive suspension, the dealer believes the slight knocking noise in the front left suspension is caused by defective thrust arm bushings.

Even though the noise comes from the left front suspension, the dealer is replacing bushings on both the left and right sides.

The parts are being ordered from Germany and will arrive in 2-4 weeks.

Any updates? The dealership took apart my whole driver's side suspension and retorqued everything still having the same issue if not worse.

Knock still there

Unfortunately, the dealer's repair attempt did not stop the knock in the left front suspension.

I'm aware this is an old post, but... I noticed the same knocking noise at low speed. I just made an appointment with BMW to take a look at the car. I will post an update.

I had the same issue, knocking at low speed in the front left, i dont have adaptive and im on dinan springs. The problem was either two things; defective strut, or the incorrect dust boot installed by a repair shop after a collision I was in. The shop agreed to replace the dust boots, but also determined the shock was defective as well, so both were replaced and the sound is gone. Would've been nice to know if only one of them was the problem, or if it was a combination, but at least its fixed.

I've been having the same clunking noise coming from the front right wheel/suspension as well. I was finally able to reliably replicate it with putting a heavier (> 200 lbs) passenger in the seat and just driving down a worn road. Dealer was able to replicate it too and replaced the front right thrust arm.

Sadly that did not seem to fix the issue and I have to bother them again with it. My car does not have the adaptive suspension.

I'm not sure what more to bring to them to help diagnose the problem. I guess I'll bring up what I read here but it doesn't seem like there's been a 100% definitive fix for this yet and many are reporting it.

Sorry for the bump of an old thread but I think this is a common enough issue to keep alive.

Im also having the same issue with my M340i with adaptive suspension. Took it to the dealership and replaced the front upper guide support. However this did not fix the issue. If anyone has any recommendations to what it can be that would be great. The noise is coming from the front passenger side and I can feel a very slight vibration on each thump/click noise.

Same problem here with a 2020 m340i. Did the fix in this TSB and it did not help (SIB 31-01-20). Hoping someone can resolve the issue at the dealer and post the write up.

Wow. Ok, in the same boat. For sure a metal on metal clunk just like everyone else is reporting. Forman was finally was able to replicate when I told him to leave it in the sun for a few hours as it's only apparent when it's hot out and the car has been sitting.

Turns out the previous owner had Dinan monoball joints installed on the tension struts. Of corse the Forman said this was the problem but couldn't inspect the monoballs as they were not qualified.

Took it to a Dinan authorized dealer and had them take a look as it would be covered under the Dinan warranty. They said the monoball checked out just fine and I had to pay $185 for the inspection. :

So back to square one. This is not a normal sound and it's concerning.

My car is also a 2020 M340i with adaptive suspension.

Does your noise also eventually stop after driving a little while?
