This is the G28-based "i3xx" (actual production name not yet public) already known to be coming to China, and only China. We also already know (and have seen proof of on test vehicles) that the G26 also will employ this same long wheel base chassis. So this electric 3 Series will actually just be an i4 with a different body, meaning it will be mechanically identical to the i4. Although, strictly speaking, there is no guarantee yet that it will have all of the motor and battery configurations that will be available to the i4 (and it may also have some "lesser" ones).

TL;DR: It's not coming to the US. It's an i4 with different sheet metal, and nothing more.

Fair enough, but I'm in the UK, not the US

BMW might choose to launch this (maybe not in the LWB version of G20) alongside the i4 in Europe to:

1) maximise the return from the new EV drivetrain investment
2) use in marketing to say they have x or y number of EVs in the portfolio
3) also (most importantly for the EU market) to reduce their corporate Co2 average to offset the more polluting models (X, M etc) and reduce their financial exposure in that respect.
