M340i or left over M4 CS?

Weirdly enough over here they're going for the same price at the moment, which one would you go for?

As always with something like this, depends on what you want.

My choice was coming from a 440i, I went with the M340ix because of the usability and all the new tech my 4 series lacked. It’s my daily driver and I love it. Very comfortable and has enough power to play with.

I drove an M4 (not a cs) and wouldn’t want one as a daily... a ton of fun to drive, but just not worth it IMO for a daily as far as comfort.

Probably less relevant to your question is that I needed an all wheel drive instead of a rear wheel drive because of a relocation.

I'm going to play devils advocate on this one, half my office has an M3 / M4. I rarely see them on the road but in the tech industry they seem a dime a dozen oddly.

If you've got that kind of money to throw at a wall suspension means nada, most of them have AC Schnitzer (or equiv) upgrades etc. etc. the only place you can use M340i power / M4 power is on a track. Unless you're fortunate enough to buy one cash finance doesn't permit track days on a regular 3 series.

Some of the office people drop more than the cost of a replacement suspension every time they track it for new wheels / pads etc.

They keep pushing me to get one but I'm like you.. Never saw the appeal but for different reasons. Although when presented with both at the same cost it becomes a different option.

Ride comfort sorted we're still talking a very different level of cars. Of course preference is still key but it seems madness in a sense. BMW's primary line flagship on equal cost value..

Only you can answer that question. The M4 CS components are in a different league engine, brakes, transmission, wheels, chassis, you name it but if the car doesn’t fit your needs or wants it doesn’t matter much does it? But if both fit, M4 CS of course.

Cannot even compare those two.
However, if you have no use for the CS (track/daily twisted roads) I’d stay away from it.

Depends what you're after, but generally speaking;

M4cs - great car that really comes alive on the track. Looks great and will hold its value much better in comparison to the M340i. As a daily it's not for everybody, lots of cabin noise, stiff ride, and a lot less comfortable to drive especially in stop/start traffic.

M340i - great all round car, very comfortable, lots of tech and fast enough for daily use. On the track though it will reach its limits fairly quickly and has nowhere near the capability of the M4cs.

2 cars made for completely different purposes

definitely cs but would also have a beater for running errands and winter ... cs will hold value much better and is a dual purpose car tailored for spirited drives and track

I've tried to take an M3 up a hill in winter, it was Austin Powers level of comical. It isn't my primary DD either, got a BMW diesel highway muncher for that task.

If you aren't tracking it, then go for the M340i. If they made a Manual CS I'd be all over that though.

with winter tires or without?

I remember a few years ago a dude in 740i on bold tires in winter storm trying to get up a small local street. I stopped to help him out and told him go shut her down and come back when the snow melts since the snow was accumlting quickly. He thought I was joking until he attempted to get going but the car did not move.

On another note I was completely surprised when I saw 993 911 in Breckenridge a few years ago with skis mounted on roof rack.

snows are a must and then you are ok. lsd helps also.

It rarely if ever snows or becomes icy over here (some years nothing), the need for winter tyre's are practically none. Unfortunately I had to attend a house viewing and the M3 was the only car I had available at the time.

I got half way up the hill, went sidewards back down it, parked up, walked the rest of the way ..! So there's an extra reason to buy an M4, exercise.

there you go multiple benefits.

one of the key capabilities of m4 is being able to fit much wider tires than on m340i.

M340i is a sweet car and plenty fast for the street. Unless you're used to 450-500 hp, you won't think it's slow. But that CS is *special* while the 3 series is just a really nice car. For me I'm done with RWD when BMW makes excellent rear biased and LSD spec'd AWD but if you like RWD and will use the capability, get the CS.

CS is much more enjoyable and exciting car.
Lease rates are crazy low for CS these days.
Also you need winter tires on snow, because even if you climb up hill on summers, you won't have have control going down hill ,regardless 2wd or 4wd.

To be honest.. I think it should really be a question of how do you drive and have you ever had a full M car? If you haven't, jump in and experience it. As much as people say there's not a difference, there absolutely is - especially since DCT isn't existing on future M's. ZF is absolutely amazing but DCT during spirited driving is a different animal IMO. Plus the reality is the lease hack-ability of a CS right now probably won't happen for a while again with all M models being fairly new.

Personally, I faced the same dilemma and ended up in a m340i because I found my M4 non comp too harsh for daily driving for my taste. YMMV. And I didn't want a CS which is even harsher and less refined. However, if I hadn't had the M4, I would've gotten the CS to to experience it.

Either way you're choosing between two great cars.

I appreciate everyone's responses, I've driven a few M3's (track day experiences, borrowed one from a friend whilst my car was having work done).

I like them, very nice cars and extremely fun to boot but there were ultimately too many factors working against it. I've started travelling more for work recently, in the past stiffly sprung, high HP cars used for 5AM 250 mile trips over woeful roads resulted in replacements shortly after.

Also it's not just the initial cost, over here they're obsessed with making expensive fun cars even MORE expensive. First year road tax alone is around $2700.00, servicing costs are around $700.00 a time, insurance is high because everyone wants to steal them.

I've had a car stolen before and it wasn't a fun experience. In the end I went in a completely different direction, one I never expected, after test driving a Kia Stinger 3.3 GTS I was enamoured by it and placed an order the next day.

just from a value perspective, the m4 will be worth 5x the amount of the m340i.

the m lite cars do not depreciate well.

If you can live with it, M4 CS. Performance without compromise. If you need some comfort and a really well rounder car M340i would be a better bet.

If you're like me, the novelty of a new car wears off quick, so I try to incorporate that in my decision. Buy what makes you happy and comfortable to own - especially during these times.

Older M4s feel so common (they're everywhere in Dallas). Dime-a-dozen.

So far, the M340i is much more rare to see. For now.

As others have said, the M340i is a lot more comfortable as a daily.

M4 CS. Choice couldn't be more clear financially (retain value better), performance or driving dynamics.
