What are your thoughts on the M340i exhaust note?

I test drove the M340 a couple of times (thinking of ordering at the end of the year) and i really enjoyed the drive but I felt that the exhaust note was a little quiet for me (even in Sport+ mode). Does anyone else feel this way? I read somewhere on here that BMW will be releasing a performance exhaust system later this year. Does anyone have any more details on that or thoughts on the exhaust note in general?

Thanks!

For being stock, it's pretty loud in Sport Plus.

I test drove and ordered mine on Saturday. Currently driving an F30 w/ MPPSK. It seems a bit more subtle than the MPPSK, but I still like it very much.

I thought mine got a little louder around 1,000miles. I really like it now. For me, if it was any louder in sport+ I would find it a little embarrassing (too "look at me").

Yep. Any louder and it's a bit juvenile or race car like

ETA: sometimes I want louder, but only if I could disable for daily driving!

Apparently there's a M-Peformance exhaust in the works for it to be released sometime by the end of this year... I could use a little bit louder of an exhaust although stock it's really nice and sounds like music to my ears

Sounds good to me but it would be nice to have the option for a notch louder when you feel lije being a little juvenile. I will miss the fantastic exhaust on my Ftype-R alot.

In sport+ it's pretty freakin loud for this category of car. I did full throttle 1-2-3 manual shifts with windows open downtown over the weekend and the upshift cracks were remarkably potent. High rev overrun pops can also be loud. Everything in between sounds great. Then in comfort it hushes right up so the wife isn't embarrassed. What's not to like? Muffler delete if you want more.

To me the MPPSK on the F30 340i is really nice, I am hoping the M-Performance Exhaust for the M340i becomes available soon for Port install - but I may end up having to take delivery of the car w/o it.

The MPPSK exhaust sounds great in Sport/Sport Plus mode, but sounds pretty mundane in Comfort mode. So for daily driving it won't attract any attention at all, but in Sport mode it sounds great - the pops and burbles are way more random than in the M340i too.

I know some cars, if left in Sport + will start up louder VS turning off the car in Comfort mode so when you start the car next day it's not so loud.

Is that the case with the M340? I would rather it not sound loud on startup in the morning. Or does it always start up as loud every time no matter what setting you leave it/put it on?

Mine always seems to be loud on startup, but quickly quiets down after a few seconds.

Isn't the sound "enhanced" with noise coming from the speakers?

It's very quiet for me, but I'm also coming from a straight-piped 335i (which is obnoxiously loud, especially during cold starts) lol. Without a doubt, it is magnitudes louder than my 335i was in stock form (whether that's real volume, or active sound is up for debate).

My buddy tells me whenever I'm coming around the corner or pulling up he can hear the exhaust before he sees me, so it must not just be fake interior sound. Plus if you hear the car on startup, it sounds very mean from the outside. I have remote start and use it regularly so I can enjoy that sound

I agree, and based on when I heard the dealership doing flybys in another M340i (assuming this was to get me excited lol), it was definitely not quiet. It's just not as loud as a straightpiped 335i (which is by no means a bad thing lol. My 335i was obnoxiously loud).

I really hope its about as loud as my 650 msport (just without the v8 sounds ). I think my current msport exhaust is perfect, quiet when cruising in comfort, but very noticeable in soort and sport+

I am coming out of a 2017 M3 and before that had a 2014 335 M-sport both with stock exhaust. My M340 sounds much better than the 335 but not as good as the M3. I wish it had a lower pitch, more growl like. It has more pops and snaps than the M3, but my wife says it sounds like it is broken!

I can't figure out why anyone would need this vehicle any louder.. The factory ASD is so pronounced that I put down window and turn up the volume, so the pedestrians can hear my exhaust from inside the cabin

Joking aside, the aural feedback, whatever the source might be, is just prefect for this model of vehicle... 👌🏻

I don't understand how people can be happy with this sound, so far from the enjoyment of an equivalent AMG or Audi S version... Was fine until the E9x, starting from the F3x it got bad.

Except that, the car is fantastic.
