2020 bmw m340i  [0.00]
My instrument panel went blank!

My instrument panel suddenly just went black while i was driving have no idea what to do?

You're probably best off going to the dealer. Does the HUD still work?

It could be many things in this situation (electrical, fuse etc etc...), best to let dealer manage this.

For starters, pull over and cycle the car off then on. Maybe even get out and lock it in between.

HUD still works but the instrument panel infront of me was completely black while i was driving down the road it literally just went black on me, And then came back on about a minute later. Very crazy!

I'd take it in still. Could be something loose triggering it, especially if it happens again. Just have dealership address it.

Probably software related. BMW (should) have a watchdog circuit to watch for loss of signals thereby forcing a hardware controlled reboot. That's likely why the LCP resumed working after a minute or so.

Take it in and let them know. Most likely you'll be upgraded to latest 7.2019.xx version.

So far BMW has been slow to push out OTA upgrades. Plus, OTA doesn't upgrade all modules in car, only certain ones.

Take it in. Maybe they'll find a fault code that will assist them. FYI, when the digital dash was released on the G30 they had connector issues. They eventually swapped out a bunch of them on early cars.

However, in this case I'm gonna guess it's more software. Especially given the issues to date with iDrive 7 and LCP. Just ask the early purchasers of the G05.

Happened to me too, took the car into the dealer and they kept it a week. Just to update the iLevel. hasn't happened since.

It's a software issue and there is a PuMA measure for that which corrects the rebooting, on/off of the iDrive display and for those that have the digital multifunction speedometer.

Easy fix.

My dealership mentioned to me that you can reset most of the electronic systems in the car’s infotainment area by pressing and holding the volume button (dial) for 30 seconds. The whole system will then reboot and you’ll see the BMW Welcome animation on your cockpit.

Happened to me tonight. I'm already updated to 7/2019.39. Going to email client advisor and let BMW Genius know. Hard reset of idrive has nothing to with this as the idrive was working fine. (I tried while driving and it did nothing) idrive is only linked to the map in the cockpit display so has nothing to do with speedo or tachometer. HUD gave me all pertinent info aside from gas level so I'm not that worried about safety but if in 4 yrs and 1 day of ownership it fails I want documentation that this happened early on.

Good thing is It started working after shutting the car off completely and starting up again but there is definitely a glitch somewhere. Others have mentioned some software issues that are out of my knowledge base so will see what happens and if it recurs. Just thought it would be good for others to know they are not alone and if this becomes a major issue we can point BMW in the direction of this thread for other instances.

I have the same problem but mine happens in the i-drive screen, intermittently it goes blank for about 5 seconds the reappears. Noticed this issue after the software update. I've added this thread to my bookmark
