I like the grill in the top one. But he should have left it at that. I prefer the BMW rims, and I also don't like that he lowered the car

If there is sufficient demand for a front clip with a smaller grill, the aftermarket will step in and create something. The most natural choice would probably be to design a bumper that accepts the G2x 3er grill, but people also seem to like the G1x 8er grill too, so a G2x 4er or G8x M3/M4 front end designed around that part might also be marketable.
There have been custom body kits that greatly alter the aesthetics of the vehicles for which they are designed, to the point that they barely resemble the original (sometimes to good effect, sometimes inducing esophageal reflux), so it should not be at stretch at all to come up with something that switches out the grill. In the past, there has rarely, if ever, been demand for this because the grill is a key identifying characteristic of a vehicle that one usually wants to feature rather than to remove. Perhaps we've arrived at a situation where that won't be the case. I am not convinced at all yet that the copiously upsized grill will remain as polarizing with the passing of time as it has been upon its initial unveiling, but we shall see. |

You know, the top image looks like an F32. It's too familiar. That's probably why BMW is making a bold switch to a new design. BMW's goal is to bring new customers to the brand, not recreate the same car ad infinitum for a never-changing clientele. The merits of the styling change can be debated, that is, was it a good or bad choice, but wanting to turn back isn't going to be a recipe for success in the long-term.

Funny comparison - BMW Blog just posted this rendering on Facebook: every single comment so far is in favor of the smaller grill.

The bottom picture looks better. The more "traditional" kidney grill doesn't fit well within the context of the whole car. The design language of the concept is muscular and aggressive, so a prominent grill fits. This car with the smaller grill looks analogous to a muscular athlete with a thin little neck.
Like the concept or not, the design language was built to feature the larger grill. |
