Unless you're planning on tracking the car regularly and as the better daily driver, I'd take the M340i.

i really don't get the whole real M vs M-lite thing, literally who cares, i cannot imagine buying a car that's ~$30k more just because it's a "real M". i'd have to really want what comes with it, which i maybe would, but i wouldn't give the "real M" part a millisecond of thought |

as for OP if your heart desires the M4 then that is what i would get. don't save ~$100 a month to get something you don't really want, or you will regret it every day. get what your heart wants

I drive an M340i and I'd take an M3 over it. (Don't like the M4) Even though the M340i is more comfortable, and pretty much almost just as quick, driving an M3 especially with a individual color is next level man.

Another reason I stated that is because there are many threads debating previous M chassis or new M340i chassis. Many people were comparing to see if the M340i was good enough for the same price as a M4 / M3, and my response to that is also, no. It isn't a real M car. Nothing wrong with a M340i, at all - it's a great great car. Value wise, if paying the same monthly, why not get a full M car is my point. There are things the M340i does either better or just as well as the F8x M car. However, OP mentioned he likes to go to track days, car events, rallies. All these things ultimately means he could benefit from a M car. Nothing more, nothing less. I've owned many non-M cars before and theres nothing wrong with them, but if I'm looking for a track tool, or something more performance oriented, then a M car is definitely more worth it, especially if the price is nearly the same. |

Curious as to why you went M340i route? What did you end up paying for your M340i and what made you go that route despite what you just stated?

I had the pleasure to drive the M4 a couple of days around Munich.
Although the car is a hand full for real traffic, it was a constant endulgement to drive. It feels so dexteruos and angry when you explore the high end of the rpm range, feel the but kick on gear changes and feel the rear axle searching for grip on serpentine back roads. This is not just a machine, it's a monster that's so alive! A M340i will probably be the better adjusted car for reasonable people, but in this case, I would prefer to be a hooligan! |

I had a f80 before my m340i. The only thing I miss about the M3 is the speed. The m340i is fast, but not as fast as the M3. However, what I've gained with the m340i surpasses what I miss about the M3. The m340i is a MUCH better daily driver, ride is more forgiving, technology is much improved, interior design is nicer. As well, I feel the interior quality is better, except for the upper dashboard - M3 was leather.
If this is going to be your daily driver, I wouldn't consider the M4. However, if it's not your daily driver, and you do track and club events, then definitely the M4. |

I'm seriously considering selling my F80 M3 and ordering an M340 within the next couple months. As amrh above says, the M340 is the better daily driver, and from my test drive of it, it's still plenty fun. The M3 is a hoot when driven like an idiot on back roads, but 95% of my driving is to work and back on I-95 and on city streets.

Rear subframe of the F8x M3/M4 is directly bolted to the chassis; there is no rubber bushing to wiggle about when cornering or accelerating, producing the most direct response.
That's only a small part of race car technology that F8x has, so you can guess how different the car is as a whole package.

Then I would get an M440 with AWD when it comes out next fall so you're ready to go for the next winter season. Summer of 2021 you can bring it to car shows and it will still be a "new" car. Just make sure the winter tires/wheels will fit on both the M4 and M440. I don't own an F8x or G20 so I'm not trying to be biased.

Thanks for the input. I went with the M4 in San Marino Blue, Silverstone Interior, DCT, carbon fiber mirror caps, carbon fiber spoiler, and m performance exhaust with carbon tips. The M4 is the best fit for my lifestyle (signed up for Crown Rally X) even though the M340 would be better in the winter and have slightly better technology.
