Many moons ago, my grandmother totaled a brand new Lexus, a year-old Mercedes, and 264 feet of NJ Turnpike guardrail. She was ruled at fault, despite claiming that it was a chain reaction accident and someone from behind pushed her into those cars and guard rail. Her state only required 10/20 liability insurance at the time, and that's what she was carrying.

When it came time to settle, her insurance company wrote $10K checks to both car owners and washed their hands. She was on the hook for the rest, plus paying the Turnpike Authority to replace 264 feet of guardrail. They didn't even hire a lawyer to contest the claim, since it was cheaper to write $20K in checks than pay for an attorney.

Ever since that day, I raised my own coverage to the maximum that my insurance company will write. I've also considered umbrella insurance, but that's another topic.

FWIW, I'm currently carrying these limits on 4 vehicles for under $3,000/year in NY State, with a $500 deductible:

Property Damage: $500K

Bodily Injury: $1 million / $ 1 million

Supplemental Uninsured Motorist: $500K / $500K
I just need to move lol. This state is terrible.

If heated saddles existed, I would strongly consider it!

The insurance payouts are higher due to the increase in vehicle market prices, so they pass that on to the customer through your premiums. Repairs cost more due to rising parts prices, and the cost to replace a totaled vehicle is insane now.

my 09 civic is like $30 a month just liability through geico. i put like 20k miles a year on it for the last 3 years.

'18 gt3 and '15 m3 are on specialty insurance. each car limited to under 3k miles a year. garaged. never taken to work. just for leisure and fun. i'm 35 with a clean record and its 2500/year for the GT3 and 600/year for the M3.

Just for giggles I called liberty and they gave me a quote that was several hundred dollars less than what I was paying. However, it was the bare minimum of the states requirements. So that's their game. I pay a little over $100 a month for the stinger. But that's because it's a SUPER CAR!
