Was driving home on the highway in the left lane without a ton of traffic surrounding me with a cement divider in the median when the sound of a massive "thud" emanates from my driver window. Thing splinters instantaneously but is held together by the tint (thank God).

I drive straight to the dealership as it's 5:30 and they close at 6. They quickly identify what I agree is a point of impact from what was likely a rock and start making phone calls to get a replacement window. Not looking good. First estimate is 7-10 days if they can get it rushed over from Germany. Will know more tomorrow am.

In the meantime will likely entail me paying out of pocket as insurance doesn't cover side windows in FL and i doubt its worth paying deductible and taking a hit from filing a claim on my rates.

Thought it was worth posting so others can know if this becomes a trend but I'm sure it's shit luck.

Thanks for listening.

Whoah, it's a blessing whatever it was did not come through. I am sure your reaction was immediate and you grabbed the wheel tight and a few curse words came out.

$744.15 parts and labor. Seems pretty close to gouging to me. The exact window isn't up on getbmwparts.com but something close is listed at $191. I can't see $550 in labor. That's roughly 4 hrs of labor at $130/hr. I'm pretty sure it's a 45 minute job.

It's roughly a 45-60 min job as long as the old glass comes out without it turning to crumbs and requiring extra time to clean out the door interior.

That said, book rate is commonly a multiple of actual time. Unfortunately.

Road hazards suck. Glad you're ok!

Since it's not a warranty issue, why would you go to the dealer and not expect to be gouged? Get quotes from collision repair places. Might be much cheaper.

I tried. No one could get the glass. I was actually told by safelite to go thru the dealer...sucks. I'm going to try to argue the labor and find out how much they're charging for the glass itself. I would say $200 for the glass plus $200 for the labor would be fair. In all honesty I could probably do the install myself but those days are behind me...maybe....

"Billed" time is typically longer than actual repair time.

You do not want to take that door panel off yourself. Too many things going on. Especially with the driver’s door. For reference I just had a window lift replaced at a BMW dealer and it was $500, parts and labor.

$731 and two weeks later I have my car back with a new window. It's like Christmas all over again.

That would be the Christmas where the kids have moved on from their really expensive presents after 30 minutes!

With a 3 yo and 6 yo we aren't quite there yet but they did get over the power wheels and iPad pretty quickly. I find myself getting more laughs out of the power wheels then them recently.

Glad you are safe and the window was fully repaired in not too long.

In PA it would be covered under comprehensive and insurance can't raise rates for comprehensive claims by law. I'd check if the same is true in FL for future reference.

PA law on this makes sense... You can't be responsible (at fault) for things you have no control over like being on the receiving end of a hail storm or having a rock fly through your window on the highway. As a result, you can't be hit with a surcharge and rate hike.

Yea- I looked into it. My deductible is $500. Cost was $731. Insurance wanted me to go through safelite and they said they couldn't do it and to go thru dealer. The rate hike may be correct but in FL only the windshield is covered. For $231 I'd just assume keep it off my insurance. They said the same thing for my wife's windshield on her X3 and then mysteriously the rates went up. Lose lose....
