Map updates - VA, DC... but not MD?

I noticed with my recent map update that MD is not included in the same region as DC and VA. I recently navigated from Arlington, VA to Silver Spring, MD and didn't have any problems navigating to the destination. Can someone tell me how all of this works (this is my first BMW nav system)? I'm used to just loading all of North America onto my Garmin or using Waze/Google Maps from the phone. Does it mean I shouldn't trust the system after I cross the MD border and should use Waze instead?
