Insurance renewal

Blimey!

My policy is up next month, so I thought I'd run some quotes to get an idea of what it would be.... WTF!!!

So I need business miles, fully comp. Aged 38 (39 in Aug), do around 10k miles p/a. I'm in senior management, Passed my test in 2009 and have had no claims in the last 5 yrs and have 1 yr policy NCD - I did however manage to treat myself to 3 points speeding penalty in Apr, but besides that, I'm alright.

My first ever insurance premium for this G20 (first car) last year cost £822 but the quotes today were coming back around double that at best!

Even taking miles off or removing the points made little difference to the quotes (points - around 150, 7k about 150), so I'm wondering if providers are passing Covid costs onto the customer.

WTF is going on?! Has anyone else experienced similar?

Tks

Mine was actually lower. I see your location is London... Might play a part in high costs. It's been reported that car insurance costs have actually decreased due to CV-19 and many no longer using cars so I would imagine yours could be related to postcode?

Also how long until your policy starts? The later it's left the more it is. I usually take mine out approx 1 month before it starts.

To give an example, mine was £480 for 330i G21 M Sport Pro. I'm 34 with 0 points, 1 non fault claim, 10 years NCD.

It might be worth speaking to A-Plan - I use them for my car insurance (no other connection) & they shop around amongst their panel of insurers for their best quote. Also, how you describe your occupation can affect the premium. Good luck!

Cheers folks.

Yeah nothing for me has changed other than what I put, still the same job (creatively adjusted job description), still in London etc and my policy is a month away from expiry.

I just cant understand how a doubling has occurred. Though Admiral (my current provider havent issued a renewal quote for some reason, and I cannot seem to get one).

I'll check out this A-Plan as well

According to Martin Lewis (moneysavingexpert), the cheapest time to renew is 23 days before the old policy expires. So maybe try again in a few days.

And check your job description. Adjusting it but still being truthful can save money.

Something similar happened to me back in January When my insurance was due. My previous provide was also admiral. Back in early Dec last year i got a cheaper quote from comparison site than admiral's renewal quote (7xx vs 11xx) but that's more than 28 days before my cover expired so i didn't buy one.

A few weeks later when i search the quotes again(same details) many provides disappeared from the results (No more Admiral/Tesco etc.) and the cheapest was more than 1200 from someone i never heard of. I tried a few different comparison sites but same results.

I end up calling Admiral quoting the expired offer I've been offered and luckily they accepted it.

I suspect it was some tech glitch/contract agreement that resulted in the major provides being delisted.

I did read that the FCA have stopped car insurance companies from providing you with a renewal price that is higher than a new customer would be offered.

Although this won't be active until Jan 2022, as such insurance companies are reacting now to reduce the shortfalls.

Doesn't explain the price doubling though.

Ive always found Swiftcover to be competitive, but which company is best for you depends on who you are, what you do, and where you live.

It’s good to shop around, but I avoid the price comparison websites because even if you tick the box for them not to they always seem to result in loads of phone calls afterwards, plus they sell your details.

Our multi car cover renewed in June and admiral bumped up the renewal by 300, rang up after a quick comparison search and they knocked off 400 so stayed. I agree likely to see increases now due to the great annual renewal vs new customer rip off ending.

Try putting your dad (or similar elderly relative) as a named driver - sometimes that can help.

Admiral issued a renewal quote at £1,094.24, which is £272.24 more but is the best I've seen so far.

I've just had my renewal.. I think insurance companies just dont want your repeat business.. I have been with LV for the past year which was the cheapest quote for my old E90 which was £280 fully comp with protected NCB. 20+ years of clean driving so full NCB and clean license etc.. and having just swapped the car out for a G20 the renewal has gone up to £630 fully comp with protected NCB.
A quick search on comparison websites brought that down to £380 for the same thing from another insurance company fully comp with protected NCB.
I really think these companies should be rewarding loyal customers with lower prices rather than hiking the price up for no reason.

Glad to hear there is a new rule coming in from January 2022 that bans your existing company from hiking your renewal price.

Ha! I spoke too quickly! So without any changes or adding the 3 points, my Admiral quote was £272.24 more expensive - NO CHANGES OF ANY KIND!!

With the 3 points its £1,6723.28! Nearly double the original premium
