Locked DME

Just wanted to ask what people are doing about their DME being locked out from tuning.

I had bootmod3 back in April. Sidney like it back then so I "retuned" it. I tried to give it another shot now, but when I went to go flash the car it said DME is locked. Tried to bypass that but the flash failed so I went back to stock. I'm also looking into mission performance but their site is saying locked DME requires bench unlock too. I can't afford to have my car be down for days while I send it in to be unlocked.

(Bmw dealer must've updated and locked my DME when I took it in for service back in September)

Is there a solution or a way to somehow unlock/tune remotely?

Nope. Bench unlocking is the only way.

JB4 will work without bench unlocking. Or any piggyback for that matter. Only problem is I've read about people saying JB4 didn't work on their M340is in this forum (works fine in my 330i).

Oh?

Was this recent?
There are also people that had success with it though.

Not sure what the power gains are with jb4, but they sound promising with e85 mix

No sir. Not recent. I'll post the link below. Please do go through it and maybe PM the thread starter for more info?

I agree. There are lots of people (M340i and Supra owners) who have a JB4 and say it works well. But I don't want to support a tune/piggyback and then, God forbid, you find no difference, end up getting blamed for supporting the tune/piggyback.

And yes. I add a splash of E85 and gains are obvious. Plus car feels smoother! But then, mine is a 330i. If it works the same way in an M340i, it'll be very impressive!

Ahh gotcha!

I'm willing to give it a try. BMS and PTF both offer 30 day money back guarantee so if I don't like it I can always return it.

I don't always have access to e85(it's a little out of my way) so I'll most likely be running on the 91 octane ACN map. I think the whp gain on those stage 1 maps is something like 30 or around there. Nothing huge.

With 91oct, you'll be limited. Especially when it comes to JB4. You'll probably only be able to run map 1 or 2 at most. It will provide a bump but the other maps can be tempting!

Yeah unfortunately that's what I'm limited to in Cali. I'd probably do map 2.
Maybe mao 4 with e85

JB4 and JB+ are both compatible with new locked models, zero issues.

"Bench unlocking" takes about 10mins and does not need the ECU to be removed.

It does need a tuner who has the correct tools however.

My guy hooked up his laptop to the ECU and performed some wizardry. 10mins later I was flashing BM3.

Granted my car is a 2020 and not the latest 2021 model

You can do a pre-scan with BM3 and send the stock file to protuning freaks. They'll then let you know if it's locked or not.

What software version? 03/20 or 07/20?

I went with JB+ for now, as I'm in the DME locked boat. If I like it still not sure I'll upgrade for a few months. Will wait a little bit to see what happens this year with the possible unlock and re-review flashing. I personally am looking for speed limiter unlock only honestly. Power is good for me otherwise. For the money, JB+ was worth a shot since its' really only thing that can be done for the time being.

I unlocked mine whilst on 03/20.
The update to 07/20 relocked the DME.

A quick trip back to the local tuner unlocked it again.
