If I test drove a 2020 and made the decision to order a new one based on that drive/sound I would be extremely upset to know I was shafted on the 2021's where you have to pay more to get less. I would complain to bmw na non stop about this guys

Agreed. I should be taking delivery of mine in a few weeks. If these posts are accurate, I will be rather peeved.

I have a 21 with the stock exhaust. It pops and gurgles all the time in sport mode..

Maybe they're just trying to get everyone to buy the M Performance Exhaust it's well worth it anyways!

Pops and burbles are typically tuned by allowing an intentional lean misfire when letting off the throttle. My guess is, with the 2020 it was tuned to do so, just like the F30 with MPPSK. Looks like they have dialed that back for 2021 for whatever reason. Could be to do with the new M3 coming out.

In park I can get some gurgling and few pops too but once in drive absolutely nothing, even in sport plus. 2k miles into it quite disappointing.

I'm curious if you're able to use bootmod for 2021 models? Or if they have the "new ECU" that doesn't allow tuning of any kind?

I suspect they are doing two things.
1. Keeping some uniformity with the European market
2. Making some clear seperation now that the M3/4 has launched

right - and while I might agree, is there anyone we can call to confirm? I feel like this should have been noted somewhere as a lot of us (not all, but a lot) had the exhaust notes/pops..etc weighing into our buying decision.

That's really sucky news. Call me childish, but I live for the pops/bangs/burbles; lucky to have gotten a 2020 w/ MPE. Engine sounds and exhaust notes are such a massive part of the driving experience for me, which is actually one of the main reasons why I'm not fully on board with electric vehicles at the moment (I get it, who doesn't want 100% tq available at 0 RPM, but still...).

If you haven't gotten the car from the dealership yet. Don't sign anything and ask for a test drive first. It's not your car until you sign the paper at the dealer. I got a 2020 with mp3 and it sound amazing and if it didn't, I would not take the car. It's literally like one of the main reasons I picked this car.
