From replies posted, if OTA update does overwrite and removes flash tune - would’ve been helpful if MP or other tuners posted explicit message earlier on forum, web site not to accept OTA update. Perhaps I missed it. Sigh..lesson learned to decline in the future. Hopefully DME not locked and cannot re-flash...

Connected with Alex and where flash is removed, DME is locked due to BMW’s OTA update. Need to send Alex the DME to bench unlock and re-flash.

Perhaps there’s a sticky so that others don’t make same mistake. If flashed do not apply BMW OTA update otherwise will remove flash and lock DME

Question is can he unlock the DME if it is locked again? Seems like each time they lock it with a new firmware update BMW makes it harder to unlock it. When I sent my DME to Alex the first time for a flash I did it after a firmware update and it took him a few days to unlock it.

need real-life experiences for this, and tuners should give us the answers.....
and we are not talking about 2021 models with newer DME which un-tunable anyway, we are talking about those who has flash-tuned.

2. will DME be re-lock again and is it bench unlockable after OTA updates ??

I got my tune from Gintani and when I did an OTA update a while back it got rid of the tune. The guys at Gintani told me to turn off the OTA updates as it would override any tuning done. They were able to tune it again and all is fine.

Ah bummer, I didn't catch it in time but this morning my car started preparing for the most recent OTA update. Does anyone know if the OTA update is a two step process? The way the update reads is that is it preparing my car for the update which makes it seem like this isn't the actual update.

This sucks since I would have to send my DME out to California again to get unlocked and last time it took a few days to unlock it. It worked out okay last time because I went on vacation when I sent it out but I'm not going on vacation for a while so I'm not sure what to do.

From what I understand it downloads the OTA first then you have the option to ignore it and not install it or to install it. Just don't install the update and you should be ok. In the event that it is confusing and you do it accidentally, you are not far from me in Crofton Md. The place that tuned my car, Kassel is not far into PA. It would be worth the 1hr to 1.5hr ride to have them unlock the ecu for you instead of shipping it out to Cali. I believe they charge around $200 for an unlock only. I can give you all the info if you should need it.

PS - My auto repair shop (LaScuola Motorworks) is in Randallstown Md if you ever want to drop by and talk cars, compare notes, or get minor work done!

Sorry for the late reply I was getting my Dinan springs installed today. If you have the BMW connect app you can go into:

More -> settings -> remote software upgrade -> disable "download automatically".

I believe this is all you need, there might be some settings in the iDrive but I think this should keep it from downloading.

Car is a 2020 model and thus has the ECU hardware which can be unlocked.

I unlocked and flashed BM3 whilst on 03/20 software.

I then received 07/20 OTA update. This relocked the DME.

My local tuner then unlocked me again.


It's not the software version that stops us unlocking, it's the hardware. The 2021 models have a new DME which cannot (yet) be cracked.

Yes, the OTA update to 07/20 relocked my DME.
However my local tuner unlocked it again for me and we reflashed BM3.

I was lucky. Before installing the OTA software update, I used BM3 to reflash back to stock map.

Just finished with re-flashing car after receiving back ECU which Alex bench unlocked. Said no cost with unlocking since first go around. To earlier question, Alex relayed that BMW OTA update removes flash and locks where need to bench unlock each time and re-flash.

Sent ECU overnight with overnight return label where received ECU back next day after Alex received and unlocked. Just needed to put back ECU and then re-flash via OBD.
