My Thoughts on the 20 vs 21 M340i

A friend of my recently got a 2020 M340i and he told me to test drive it see how it feels since I had a 2021 M340i as loaner for couple days. I love that car btw, insane acceleration, way faster than previous 340. The 2020 stock definitely had better exhaust sound with more aggressive pops as I previously read online, but I gotta give the speed to 2021 with the mild hybrid. The mild hybrid is no joke, it makes the car accelerate way faster and pushes you back in the seat more. A lot of people complained the fact that 2021 got quitter cause of the hybrid, but nothing can't be fixed with a little exhaust work, I feel like it's definitely more worth to go with 2021 and get an exhaust on it. Also the choice of red/blue/black caliper is really nice, my loaner was white with black wheels and red caliper, really nice car.

Correct with the mild hybrid you could tell the acceleration is quicker and smoother when compare 20 vs 21 version.

lol if i ever get another M340i loaner I can race him, but even at higher speed say 80-120 you feel the MY21 model is quicker to response, it pushes you back harder.

I like how it says 'eBoost' on the dash when doing this.

Kind of. 2021 is more like 382 + 11 hp.

The problem is that varies with the battery charge, so it's not always available.

This.

Again, it's people wanting to make these sweeping statements without ever touching existing facts.

People craft a set of their own 'facts' to suit an opinion.

Not sure about the US specs but at least over here in Southeast Asia, the specs provided by my local BMW dealer are that the 2020 M340i is rated at 387hp whereas the 2021s are EU6d-compliant and rated at 374hp + 11hp (from the hybrid motor). No difference in quoted acceleration timings.

I haven't seen anyone's own facts here. I've seen opinions that a '21 feels faster and speculation as to why. There are possible explanations, you know. As for the website: perhaps in certain countries/markets the power has to be listed differently? Perhaps they simply carried forward the 2020 information because it's the same ICE? In terms of actual performance, until there's an instrumented test comparing the two we don't actually know. As of now, the only fact on the ground here is the exhaust of the '20 being more aggressive.

What do you mean existing facts, the existing facts that everyone knows is that BMW underrate their power and 0-60 times. The only fact here is they added the hybrid motor, I made an opinion that it makes the acceleration feels faster stock to stock. You know the feel of acceleration doesn't determine 0-60 time right? I have been in the Honda Type R before and the acceleration is way more aggressive than my 440, but that doesn't mean he is faster than me 0-60 or have more hp.

The 21 M340s are heavier by 78 lbs.

The 2020 M340 xDrive is 4949 lbs

The 2021 M340 xDrive is 5027 lbs

This is based on VIN stickers of the two model year cars.

I believe the 0-60 times are the same because the extra weight on '21 is offset by the extra 10-11 hp.

It's pounds/lbs. Check your door jam with the VIN and weight sticker, it'll show it too

That's not telling you the weight of the vehicle - that should be a reference to maximum weight allowed. No way a 3er is 5,000 pounds.

Good clarification and agree.

That weight is the GVWR - Gross Vehicle Weight Rating. Max possible weight.

I was assuming that that a 78 lbs rise in the GVWR could be attributed to the increased weight of the 21 (due to things like the mild hybrid) but could be wrong - could just be that they increase the weight capacity.

According to bmwusa the curb weight of the 2021 M340i xDrive is 3,979 lbs. That’s 11 lbs heavier than the weight shown on carbuzz for the 2019 & 2020.
